HEADS UP - HEARTS OPEN
by Len Gierach

November 27 2007:

HEADS UP ?" HEARTS OPEN

---------------------   a speaker review by Len Gierach

1 out of 5 Canadians  will experience a mental illness during the course of our  lifetime!

Elizabeth Olson Glover's   reminded those of us present at November 27's meeting how mental health issues and challenges affect or will affect every one of us , whether immediate , extended family or network of friends.

Fortunately, there are many available resources in our community that serve to educate  and facilitate resources for individuals and families that need them.  Elizabeth's passion for community outreach ( in particular presentations with jr/sr high students)  was felt by all as she gave us an overview of the operation of the Canadian Mental Health Association, in particular the operations here in the Edmonton Region.

Suprisingly for many was the revelation that CMHA Edmonton is NOT funded by government, but largely through United Way, Capital Health and private donations.

Their mission is to MAKE MENTAL HEALTH MATTER.   The organization                 " promotes the mental health of all and advocates for and supports the resilience, recovery, and quality of life for the 1 in 5 Canadians who will experience a mental illness during the course of their lifetime."

Sadness and loss were a few of the mixed emotions I felt from my own circle of friends and family when listening to Elizabeth share.  I thought also of how just recently a friend had made a criticism about the heavy bias of  media /public attention/sentiment /research/gov't funding  towards the "visible" v.s. the "invisible"  disabilities .

And I left after Tuesday's  presentation ,  a  little more reflective and grateful for

the commitment , passion and courage shown by our young speaker.

CMHA's programs and services are readily available  in the forms of children's summer fun camps, housing programs ( 104 independent living units ) community education, young adult social and recreation programs, life skills and leadership training programs.

For more information check out   www.cmha-edmonton.ab.ca    www.mymentalhealth.ca

For a copy of "The Spark" a monthly newsletter, contact CMHA Edmonton 414-6300

(Note: I asked Elizabeth for a list of any movies that might have a main character who is challenged by a mental health illness. Watching these films as a family may  lead to comments /reactions by family members and  opportunities  to dialog. As of today 11/28 I haven't received word. If anyone else  is interested  contact me  :  lgierach@telus.net

Annual Christmas Party
by Ken Germain

Good food, great friends and plenty of laughs are guaranteed at the 2007 Rotary Christmas Party.

Edmonton Country Club- 6201 Country Club Road. Tuesday, December 11 at 6:00 for cocktails and 7:00 Prime Rib and salmon buffet.

Driving directions, in case you forget from year to year like I do are:

South on 170 Street from the Whitemud to T intersection (62 Ave / Wanyandi Rd.). Turn Left to the third Right (Wilkin Road) to the first Left (Country Club Road). If you are in Calmar, then you've gone too far.

We could use a couple more singers for some carols. Please let me know if you can help. We will have the "Silly Gift Exchange" as in the past. No recycling last years' gift. The main playing rule for this is that you have to trade one time minimum if asked to. If desired, you can be a spectator to this by not bringing a gift.

MASSIVE GROWTH AT EDMONTON AIRPORT
by Len Gierach

MASSIVE GROWTH AT EDMONTONAIRPORT

---------    a speaker review by Len Gierach

Reg Tilley's recent presentation to our club highlighted current  information and trends.  Edmonton is Canada's fastest growing airport, with 22 consecutive months of double digit growth!

In 2004 Edmonton Int'l served 4 million passengers.  2008 projections are for 6 million.   2012 projections 9 million -  all of this on a sound financial base -$13 million net earnings on revenue of $110 million

Three factors account for this significant growth: the Edmonton economy, an increase in the number of routes to/from Edmonton (e.g. 26 "sun" flights to 11 destinations ), and the increase in the number of direct service routes ( eg London ) 52 destinations are now served by Edmonton , 10 of these US.

The growth rate of passenger traffic is 17% ( year to date ) This  compares to Montreal            ( 9%)  and the Canadian average (6%).  The predicted volumes of traffic for 2012  have been surpassed, with maximal use of existing facilities and demanding the current and future  building out of infrastructure. The challenge is to do so without disrupting existing services.

As traffic is expected to double over the next 15 years, the "airport of the future" will necessarily need to become more efficient.  Better use of technology will enable processes to be more efficient. (For example, baggage handling, security and check-in).

Some trends to watch for are more frequent flights with smaller aircraft to other Canadian hubs.  Stakeholders are anxious to see a duty-free zone where value could be added to goods near the airport, stimulating another economy and slowing down the bottleneck of air cargo traffic.

Reg spoke of  hopes for fundamental policy changes ⿢ negotiation of  bilateral open sky agreements similar to the US and the European Economic Union .  This would serve to free up the existing restrictive regulations, allowing more airlines to fly in and out of Edmonton.

In conclusion , the next five years will see plenty of airport expansion construction, with new gates and bridges to accommodate this dramatic growth.  Watch for the new Marriott Courtyard Hotel to be built out in the next year.

Leo McCloskey UPDATE!
by Hans Granholm

Dear Friends,

As you are well aware, I have missed a great deal of Rotary luncheons this fall, and my schedule is such that I will certainly be missing several more before returning on a regular basis. This is because of health reasons. I found myself feeling exceptionally ill in September, and so sought advice. After several tests, it was announced to Doris and me that my cancer has metastasized in the peritoneum, the bag that lines the abdomen. The disease has advanced so much that the only realistic goal is to slow its growth rate. There is no hope of killing off all of the cancerous cells, and they cannot be surgically removed. Consequently, my condition is now terminal. I have between some indeterminate number of months to perhaps a couple of years left. My spirits are fine, although I am sure there will be days. Doris has also accepted the fact. Amber is struggling with it and Rylee has not fully grasped the severity of the situation - there is only so much people can absorb at a time. I have informed my mother and siblings in Ottawa, as well as friends outside of Rotary and work-related contacts.

I know you are now all extending your good wishes to all of us and keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. I know you are also willing to lend a hand in any way you can. Well, you may or may not know that Doris is in the throws of preparing a 2,600 square foot retail space - Angie's Home Accents - with a target grand opening of December 15. There is so much work to do over the next several weeks. Perhaps you could offer to mount plastic to the walls and help clean the ceiling before it gets painted. The floor is in dreadful condition and needs a tremendous amount of elbow grease to level out bumps and dips. Perhaps you could assist with affixing price labels to the goods she will be selling. Of course, our house is overflowing with merchandise she has already purchased, and all of it will need to be packed, transported (2 kilometers), unpacked, and stored on shelves. Speaking of shelves, they must be assembled and mounted. The list goes on. From my own perspective, it seems I will be making several trips per week to the Cross Cancer Institute, and may need to avail myself of a "shuttle" service; otherwise, I can't think of anything else at this time (except mounting our exterior Christmas lights !).

Your friend,

Leo

Footnote:
For the time being I will coordinate any volunteers interested in helping Doris so that she does not have to field phone calls from all directions.
Regarding Leo's "shuttle" sevice, I will coordinate this as well. I would appreciate an indication from members who might be willing to, on sometime short notice, drive Leo.
Please contact me any time at 780-466-5566 or email hgrdane@telusplanet.net

by Peter DeNooy

The 2007 campaign is underway! On November 14, 2007, this year's campaign was kicked off in the presence of lots of media. Dressed up in red hoodies and blinking red noses, President Peter, Jim Rivait of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Acting Inspector Bill Horn of the Edmonton Police Service, Arnie Stadnick of the Boilermakers and Jim Ashton of the Alberta Motor Association announced the start of this year's campaign.

You may fill out our Operation Red Nose applications at any time during business and operational hours.  All training will be at the Operation Red Nose headquarters dispatch center at 15220 114 Ave. on operation nights.

The headquarters office will be open from 9 am until 4 pm , Monday through Thursday.  The Boilermakers are closed between 12 and 1, so if you wish to come during that time, please phone the office first.

The headquarters dispatch hall will be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night - operation nights from 8 pm until 3 am starting November 28 until the end of December.

We are also operating Grey Cup Sunday (Nov 25), and New Year's Eve (Dec 31).  Volunteers are able to apply during office and operation hours.

Please do not fax your applications in, as you still have to bring the clearance forms from the RCMP or fill out the police information checks for Edmonton .

This program is an important component in our fundraising effort for youth programs, so be sure to support us in any way you can.

Please sign up and volunteer in any capacity you can.

We will again operate from the fantastic facilities, located at 15220 - 114 Avenue, which are generously donated by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge 146 .

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.
