"Rotating Wheel Dinner"
by Granholm, Hans

We had 80+ members, spouses and guests attending our "Rotating Wheel" dinner at the Mayfair last Tuesday.
It was a lively affair, but outgoing president Orville handled the rowdies with his usual panache.
The Sergeant-at-Arms du jour, Art Baird raised a probable record amount of money from the unsuspecting.

Orville thanked the retiring board members: Leo McCloskey , Heather Platt, Rose Marie Basaraba and Bill Mouris .

The club offers a special thanks to Heather for all the arrangements for this and other events and to Dianne Sleen for supporting Orville in this very busy and active Rotary year.

Rose Marie Basaraba was named "Rotarian of the Year", a very popular and well deserved recognition of Rose Marie's dedication and involvement in so many areas of club service.

Club Rotary Foundation Chair, Ron Dobbin , presented new Paul Harris Fellowships to Marlene Henry, Barb Craig , Irene Hoch, Larry Sales and Wendy Fung Reuscher.
In addition, these multiple Paul Harris contributors were recognized: Augie Annicchiarico,
Ron Dobbin , Ron McCullough, Bob Sandercock, Bruce Kemp , Art Baird and Bernd Reuscher.
Congratulations to all and Thank You for your support of the Rotary Foundation.
(Editor's note: The printed list of 'Paul Harris Fellows' on the back of the dinner program, did not accurately reflect the Edmonton Strathcona Paul Harris Fellows. An up-to-date list can always be viewed from the 'Club Information' link.)

Orville handed over the "hammer" to our new president, Peter Denooy who gave an outline of his goals for the coming year.

The new Board of Directors: President Elect
Ted Griffiths , Secretary Rose Marie Basaraba, Treasurer Augie Annicchiarico, Past President Orville Sleen , Administration Ken Germain & Jim Ashton, Membership Graham Gilchrist, Public Relations Bob Sandercock, Services Eric Solash & Jeong Sim. Rotary Foundation & Fundraising is chaired by Ted Griffiths .

Fun Golf a "HIT"
by Ken Germain

The weather was dry but a bit blustery during the first annual Fun Golf and Bar-B-Q at the Kinsmen Pitch and Putt Golf Course on Tuesday. 24 golfers and 9 more Bar-B-Q attendees enjoyed an afternoon filled with laughs, food and hardly any cursing!

Thanks to all who helped prepare and clean up, especially Leo McCloskey, Nicolle and Karen Germain for cooking the burgers to perfection. The event was profitable as well, thanks to the Kinsmen generosity as arranged by Bill Skelly. $192.00 profit was earned for our club.

Peter DeNooy and Doug Mullholland and Lorraine Skelly were all honoured for their golf scores. Lorraine certainly got her moneys' worth out of that poor little course. Putting with canoe paddle, pool-cue, baseball bat, hockey stick and driver made it all the more challenging. Few balls were lost and Ted Griffiths did not hit anyone with errant balls, so I guess it was a success.

Thanks for participating and donating prizes (especially generous was Con and Rose Marie Basaraba). See you next year!

Big Bin; Jun 2-3 2007
by Hans Granholm
How often do we hear commments from our members that "Hands-On" projects are so much more fun and rewarding that many other types of fundraising or community activities? I dare say: Quite often!

It was therefore a little disappointing to see the participation level from our club members when President Orville announced some time ago the Board's decision, on behalf of the members, to participate in the "Capital City Clean Up" campaign.
We had two 4 hour shifts on both Saturday Jun 2 and Sunday Jun 3 and we asked for 5 people for each shift. We ended up with 11 people working all the shifts, including Len Gierach's son Quinton. I think we could have done better.
The city, very graciously provided cold drinks throughout the day and big sandwiches for lunch.
Thanks to Bob Sandercock, Con Basaraba, Eric Solash, Graham Gilchrist, Jim Ashton, Len Gierach and son Quinton, Orville Sleen (four shifts!), Peter Denooy, Ted Griffiths, for volunteering and having a great time on a hot day.

So, here is a plug for you: plan now to work, at least one shift when we repeat the performance in September. The dates are: Sep 15 & 16. The event is posted in the EVENTS calendar or click this link.

Members' Attendance Reports
by Hans Granholm

As we are approaching the end of the Rotary year (June 30), we want to be sure we have your attendance correctly reported for the year.

You are reminded that up to date records are available from the web site administration page after login any time. Click on the last item in the "My ClubRunner" section and chose reports # 55, 56 or 57. Open # 55 first to see the percantage figure and if you do not agree, open #56 and/or #57 to see which meeting(s) are listed as missed.

If you do not report any discrepancies to me within the next two weeks, we will accept these reports as accurate.

Contact me anytime if you need assistance with the reports.

Cheers!

Stroke Recognition
by Hans Granholm
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Stroke Recognition

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

*Ask the individual to smile.
*Ask him or her to raise both arms.
*Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions.
They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
Tell as many people as possible about this. It could save their lives!

2007 Operation Red Nose Campaign
by Peter DeNooy

Planning for the 2007 campaign is already in full swing. The Steering Committee is meeting monthly and is working on an exciting PR and Fundraising Campaign.

The 2007 Steering Committee is chaired by Peter Denooy and is made up of Rotarians and seasoned ORN volunteers: Orville Sleen, Ted Griffiths, Peter Stoye, Lezley Zwaal, Eric DeKok, Carstens Schwank, Kathy Strawson and Del August. We are very excited that The Rotary Club of Edmonton Urban Spirits and The Rotaract Club of Edmonton Centre have recently committed to actively participate in the 2007 Campaign!

We will again operate from the fantastic facilities, located at 15220 - 114 Avenue, which are generously donated by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge 146 .

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!
