4-Way Test

JulyFest at the Koenig's -- WOW!
by Granholm, Hans
Barbara and Fritz Koenig were the gracious hosts of 75+ Edmonton Strathconians and guests at a Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona General Club Fundraiser.

Bavarian music accompanied Bavarian style food such as weiswurst and saurkraut, wienerschitzel and potato salad and meatloaf. Home made desserts and coffee. Beer and wine flowed thoughout the evening.

As usual Barbara had everything under control including her able elves, Leslie & Doug Milne, Val & Eric Solash , Lucie & Hugo Lehmann .

It was particularly nice to see Shirley & Allison BarnesPearl & Jim Ryckman came in from the homestead hitching a ride with the MacCalder's.

I know pictures were taken during the evening, perhaps we can show them in our photo album online.

Thank you again Barbara and Fritz so very much.

GROWER'S IN BLOOM!
by Rose Marie Basaraba

The flowers are not the only thing blooming at Grower Direct these days.

Our very own Rotarian, Heather Platt, has two very good reasons for positively 'blooming' with pride and success!

On July 9th, 2007, in the presence of her family and friends at a ceremony in Palm Springs, CA, Heather was awarded the honour of becoming an accredited member of the American Institute of Floral Designers. Her talent as a floral artist was proven through a rigorous Accreditation process and she is now one of very few such designers in Canada who are proud to have this claim to fame.

The AIFD is a non-profit organization dedicated to recognizing and promoting the art of floral design as a professional career. Accredited members are in the forefront of the floral industry worldwide.

Just two weeks later, on July 23rd, Heather was asked to showcase her talent in floral design by decorating 10 floats in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA in January, 2008. It is no surprise that she has already booked her flight! (Her current challenge is that hotel space is virtually non-existent. She's not asking but perhaps this presents an opportunity for Rotarians to come to the rescue of a Rotarian)......

Congratulations Heather!  Members of the Strathcona Rotary Club are very proud of you and your achievement. May your future in the floral industry continue to bloom brightly!

Members' Attendance Reports
by Hans Granholm

As we are approaching the end of the Rotary year (June 30), we want to be sure we have your attendance correctly reported for the year.

You are reminded that up to date records are available from the web site administration page after login any time. Click on the last item in the "My ClubRunner" section and chose reports #46 & 48. Open #46 first to see the percantage figure and if you do not agree, open #48 to see which meeting(s) are listed as missed.
Documents #40, 43 & 44 show various attendance reports for last year 2006-07.

If you do not report any discrepancies to me within the next two weeks, we will accept these reports as accurate.

Contact me anytime if you need assistance with the reports.

Cheers!

Report on Dr. Sim's North Korea Project
by Jeong Sim

Dear Fellow Strathcona Rotarians:

It has been a pleasure and esteemed honor of mine being a part of the Strathcona club. With your generous supports and encouragements, I have been fortunate to initiate and carry out a project entitled "Feed the Children of North Korea". Thankfully this project was officially adopted as IS project by the Strathcona club. My role has been to raise fund in every possible way. As you are already aware of, we raised $80,000 for the year of 2006.

I think I owe you a brief update on my fundraising activities and execution of fund in a point form as below:

1.      Strathcona club grant from the annual budget of International services ($3000)

2.      Southside Pentecostal Assembly, my home church ($10,000)

3.      Donations from individuals including rotary meetings ($18,000)

4.      Dr. Sim's lecture tours from Vancouver to Montreal (Korean churches) ($16,000)

5.      Book sales. I published a book in Korean language, which 100% dedicated for the cause ($20,000 to be seen)

6.      I have written about >500 letters to local rotary clubs in North America asking support (as attached) (responses are slow but hopeful)

7.      My target this year is to raise $100,000 (very wishful but to be seen)

8.      The fund last year was sent to a partner mission group in Korea by Southside Pentecostal Assembly.

9.      The fund is wholly executed at the China side, not North Korea . Foods and living supplies are transported by truck from China to North Korea (no single pennies go to North Korean's hands)

10.  I am leaving for China for a teaching mission from September 1 to December 20, 2007 . I will be residing at the Yanbien University of Science and Technology in Jilin Province of China. My role there is to teach Nutrition and also oversee in part our mission project of North Korean children as well.

11.  I take this opportunity to request a leave-absence for 4 months from the Strathcona club.

12.  It has been a pleasure for being supported and encouraged by fellow Rotarians. Deeply appreciated.

Sincerely,

Jeong Sim

2007 Operation Red Nose Campaign
by Peter DeNooy

Planning for the 2007 campaign is already in full swing. The Steering Committee is meeting monthly and is working on an exciting PR and Fundraising Campaign.

The 2007 Steering Committee is chaired by Peter Denooy and is made up of Rotarians and seasoned ORN volunteers: Orville Sleen, Ted Griffiths, Peter Stoye, Lezley Zwaal, Eric DeKok, Carstens Schwank, Kathy Strawson and Del August. We are very excited that The Rotary Club of Edmonton Urban Spirits and The Rotaract Club of Edmonton Centre have recently committed to actively participate in the 2007 Campaign!

This program is an important component in our fundraising effort for youth programs, so be sure to support us in any way you can.

We will again operate from the fantastic facilities, located at 15220 - 114 Avenue, which are generously donated by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge 146 .

When Stories disappear from the front page and the bulletin layout, they don't disappear completely.

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!
