| | "Rotating Wheel Dinner" by Granholm, Hans |
We had 80+ members, spouses and guests attending our "Rotating Wheel" dinner at the
Mayfair
last Tuesday. It was a lively affair, but outgoing president Orville handled the rowdies with his usual panache. The Sergeant-at-Arms du jour, Art Baird raised a probable record amount of money from the unsuspecting.

Orville thanked the retiring board members:
Leo McCloskey

.
The club offers a special thanks to
Heather
for all the arrangements for this and other events and to Dianne Sleen for supporting Orville in this very busy and active Rotary year.
Rose Marie Basaraba was named "Rotarian of the Year", a very popular and well deserved recognition of Rose Marie's dedication and involvement in so many areas of club service.
Club Rotary Foundation Chair,
Ron Dobbin
, presented new Paul Harris Fellowships to Marlene Henry,
Barb Craig
, Irene Hoch, Larry Sales and Wendy Fung Reuscher. In addition, these multiple Paul Harris contributors were recognized: Augie Annicchiarico,

| | District Governor Offical Annual Visit by Hans Granholm | We are delighted to welcome our District Governor, David Taylor and wife Elaine on July 10 at our regular meeting place, the German Canadian Cultural Assoc.
This is the District Governor's official annual visit to our club. Traditionally, the DG will meet with the club Board earlier in the day.
Please invite your 'Significant Other' to hear the Governor's address to the club. | | 4-Way Test by Hans Granholm | RI link: 4-Way Test | | Fun Golf a "HIT" by Ken Germain | The weather was dry but a bit blustery during the first annual Fun Golf and Bar-B-Q at the Kinsmen Pitch and Putt Golf Course on Tuesday. 24 golfers and 9 more Bar-B-Q attendees enjoyed an afternoon filled with laughs, food and hardly any cursing!
Thanks to all who helped prepare and clean up, especially Leo McCloskey, Nicolle and Karen Germain for cooking the burgers to perfection. The event was profitable as well, thanks to the Kinsmen generosity as arranged by Bill Skelly. $192.00 profit was earned for our club.
Peter DeNooy and Doug Mullholland and Lorraine Skelly were all honoured for their golf scores. Lorraine certainly got her moneys' worth out of that poor little course. Putting with canoe paddle, pool-cue, baseball bat, hockey stick and driver made it all the more challenging. Few balls were lost and Ted Griffiths did not hit anyone with errant balls, so I guess it was a success.
Thanks for participating and donating prizes (especially generous was Con and Rose Marie Basaraba). See you next year!

My dear Hans and Linda How are you?? I'm soooo good!! I still work in Klosters...in the mountains in that flowershop and I still like my work so much! It's great to make people happy just with flowers! And it's different work everyday...I'm not often doing the same thing twice, so that makes it pretty intressting! And we are such a cool team, I work with 5 other women, three of them are about my age and two of them are between 45 and 55! We really have a good time! Last week one of them had like the final test of her apprenticeship, like I had it last year...after that shes finally gonna be a florist...I sent you some pictures of what she has done! Theres also pictures from my trip to southern France and to Italy. Oh it was like sooo nice! I went to Italy with my sister and a friend...the Cruiseliner my sister was on for half a year was there so we were able to go on there and see were she worked!!Wow its soooo nice! There's two restaurants in there a bar, a huge lounge, a cinema, a casino, theres pools on there...its just like wow!!And every cabin has its own balcony! Yeah it was amazing! Other than that we walked alot...to see as much of Venice as possible! And of course we had to check out the nightlive too!!haha! So now I'm learning italian...I'll leave on the 26th of August to go to Italy for two month. I'll go to Salerno, thats near Napoli! I wanted to go right to the ocean!!So I'm really looking forward to that...it's not a long time, I?ll not speak perfectly italian after that but I guess i'll know the basics!!I hope I will!! After that I'll go to the same place again but just for a winterseason, so I'll stay there until the end of march...after that...who knows...I'll see! My family is doing good too! My parents still work in the restaurant...my sister is in Gstaad...thats the place where like all the rich people go for holidays...and my brother makes an apprenticeship as a landscape gardner!! Hes loving that job, because he's always outside...he just needs the fresh air I'm comming home alot now...almost every weekend, because theres not to many people in the mountains right now, so all the bars are closed...not too much you can do there now...and the lakes up there are soooo cold...oh I kinda miss my lake!! It's so nice to go for a swim after a hot day of work! So now I have to take a shower to cool down! But on the weekends I go home...and enjoy family friends and the lake...haha! I dont have a scooter anymore...I actually bought a car...a little blue one...it's really small!!Not like your big cars in Canada!! Well, thats all the news for now...take care...and hope to talk again soon!!! Lots and lots of love...Corina
| | Big Bin; Jun 2-3 2007 by Hans Granholm | How often do we hear commments from our members that "Hands-On" projects are so much more fun and rewarding that many other types of fundraising or community activities? I dare say: Quite often!
It was therefore a little disappointing to see the participation level from our club members when President Orville announced some time ago the Board's decision, on behalf of the members, to participate in the "Capital City Clean Up" campaign. We had two 4 hour shifts on both Saturday Jun 2 and Sunday Jun 3 and we asked for 5 people for each shift. We ended up with 11 people working all the shifts, including Len Gierach's son Quinton. I think we could have done better. The city, very graciously provided cold drinks throughout the day and big sandwiches for lunch. Thanks to Bob Sandercock, Con Basaraba, Eric Solash, Graham Gilchrist, Jim Ashton, Len Gierach and son Quinton, Orville Sleen (four shifts!), Peter Denooy, Ted Griffiths, for volunteering and having a great time on a hot day.
So, here is a plug for you: plan now to work, at least one shift when we repeat the performance in September. The dates are: Sep 15 & 16. The event is posted in the EVENTS calendar or click this link.

| | Stroke Recognition by Hans Granholm | Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Stroke Recognition
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
*Ask the individual to smile. *Ask him or her to raise both arms. *Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.
If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved. Tell as many people as possible about this. It could save their lives!

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<
With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club. Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know. If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.
A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.
It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.
Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad
The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year. For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.
The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.
Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.
NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.
Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.
