Everything You Wanted to Know About Pensions But Were Afraid to Ask (Whew!) by Jim Ashton |
Ellen Nygaard is a Deputy Superintendent with Alberta Finance, and has some nineteen years experience in the "Pensions" field. As such, she was able to present some thought provoking insight about pensions and retirement.
So, you're sitting there comfortably with the assurance that the various programs - CPP, OAS, Pension Plan (s), and RRSP - will look after you in your "golden years" (or should we say "silver years"), right? Well......maybe not so, according to "The Book of Ellen".
Retirement income is primarily made up of what are called "The Three Pillars", which are:
1) Old Age Supplement/Guaranteed Income Supplement (OAS, GIS),
2) Canadian Pension Plan (CPP), and,
3) Pension Plans, RRSP's and other income
Now, take into consideration that the "financial experts" estimate that retirees require 70% of their pre-retirement income on which to live comfortably. Throw into the mix that under 40% of Canadian workers are NOT in a pension plan (under 1/3rd for Albertans), only some 40% are making contributions to RRSP's, and that 50% (yes - 50%) of retirees are going into their retirement years with some monies still owing on a home mortgage, and you can see that the income stream may not be there to retire comfortably for many people.
Add into the equation that we are in a mode of declining participation in pension plans, and that Canadian savings are at an all-time low, and it makes for some interesting thought and discussion on just how much income one will require to retire, and, even a more thought provoking question - just who will be able to retire at a reasonable age (say 65)?
Having said that, and with all of the attending Rotarians ready to bolt out the door to apply for an income supplement job at Tim Horton's, Ellen stated that each and every circumstance is different. Being free of debt can lighten the load substantially in terms of just how much one will need to retire on. And, those with a decent pension plan, a decent amount in RRSP's, or with other forms of income can sit back and enjoy the Pina Colada's in January on the Mexican Riviera.
The topic of Ellen's presentation may well have been "Everything You Wanted to Know About Retirement But Were Afraid to Ask?" All in all it was an interesting and thought provoking talk, and the editor of this article will start scouring the "Help Wanted" ads shortly as a hedge (just kidding - I think).
Thank you Beckie, for bringing Ellen in as a speaker, and thank you Ellen, for such an interesting presentation.

Just 10,000 steps... by Rose Marie Basaraba |
The Healthy CEO
In his presentation as guest speaker to the Club at the October 23rd meeting, Dr. Larry Ohlhauser, M.D., held our attention with his positive, energetic and realistic advice on personal health. Dr. Larry put a new 'spin' on the designation "M.D." when he suggested that most of us live our lives in "massive denial' when it comes to taking personal responsibility for our personal health.
In citing some of the following statistics and illustrating his own life experience as an example, he drove home the message that we are all personally responsible for the state of our well being.
-
50% Canadians are overweight
-
20% are obese
-
80% of women live the last 11 years of their life in ill health
-
80% of men live the last 9 years of their life in ill health
-
Heart attack, stroke and cancer of the colon are the chief causes of death
-
personal wellness must include a balance of the physical wellness, relationship wellness and financial wellness
Two simple effective measures he recommended were to walk '10,000 steps a day' and to drink at least 6 bottles of water per day, steps which he guaranteed would bring about weight-loss for everyone.
In closing, he left members and guests with a final inspiring bit of advice: Drink those 6 bottles of water per day! Invest in a pedometer and get walking those 10,000 steps a day to better personal health!

Sponsoring New Club by Peter DeNooy |
There has been low interest in the newly-proposed Rotary Club of edmonton Festival City.
At the board meeting on October 18, 2007, the following motion was passed: To ask the District to re-think the establishment of a new club in the Strathcona area and to request direction on how to achieve this purpose.
The club has spent about $ 500.00 so far, and it was the board's opinion that other means and ways were to be explored before spending more club funds.
I look forward to your response and comments.

Web Site Advertising by Hans Granholm |
>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<
With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club. Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know. If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.
A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.
It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.
Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad
The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year. For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.
The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.
Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.
NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.
Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.
Cheers! |
