Greetings from China
by Jeong Sim
Dear Fellow Strathconians: To begin with, I have to say this "I miss you guys". This is a brief report from Jeong in China. Joo and I have settled in a one room Guest House at YUST where I began to teach Nutrition class to Chinese students in English. They are good studnets who are so hungry to learn. In fact they are more interested in learning English than Nutrition itself. I am trying to give them a "one stone for two birds" strategy.
By the way I miss Rotary meetings. I wrote an inquiry to Shanghai Provisional club and their replies are interesting as follows. Perhaps, it might be useful information to you. I will write again later. Cheers, Jeong

Dear Fellow Roatrian Mr. Cheah:

This is to offer a friendly greetings from Yanji city of Jilin province of China. My name is Jeong Sim, an active member of Edmonton Strathcona Rotary Club in Canada (http://edmontonstrathcona.rotary5370.org ), who is currently staying in China with a teaching assignment at Yanbian University of Science and Technology (www.ybust.edu.cn). I miss the weekly Rotary meeting very much. My question is that how to get initiate a Rotary club here in China. At this university, there are many former Rotarians and some potential interest people if a local club is organized. Please educate me on the status of provisional club in Shanghai and Beijing and how to go about it to initiate a new club. Can your club sponsor a new club? I have so many questions but let me stop here and listen to you rather. I appreciate it very much if you kindly advise me.
Cheers
Jeong Sim

Subject: Re: start new Rotary Club in China

Dear Rtn. Jeong Sim,

Welcome to China and glad to know that you keep Rotary in your thoughts while you are away from your home club!

I've been asked to respond to your enquiry to start a new Rotary Club in China. I actually have little to add to Rtn. Kim Fee Cheah's earlier response. At this time, neither Rotary International or the government of China are allowing any new Rotary clubs in Mainland China, other then the already established Rotary Clubs of Beijing and Shanghai. This will probably be the situation until the NGO regulations in China are finally released.

In the meantime, there is no harm in "active" and/or "former" Rotarians forming a "informal" fellowship group. You can meet as friends. You must keep a low profile and not be involved in "any" official recruiting of members and/or fund raising activities. This does not count as an official make-up meeting. If you are an existing "active" Rotarian and the By-laws of your home club allow, you can do official makes up through the Rotary Hong Kong E-Club or one of the other online E-Clubs.

This is a very sensitive time for Rotary in China. A special team has been set up by R.I. to communicate with the appropriate officials in China to prepare for the time when Rotary will again be fully approved in China.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Copied on this message are RI Special Representative Christopher Bramsen and Deputy RI Special Representative Serge Dumont.

Best Regards,

Rtn. Russ

Sponsoring New Club
by Granholm, Hans
The Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona is proud to announce the sponsorship of a new club in Edmonton.

I was not in attendance the last two meetings and have not received any information on what transpired.

Please come out and support this initiative.

Continental Breakfast is provided by 'Artisan Bakery & Cafe', located on 82 Ave whose proprietor Saiyed Jaffer is interested in the new club. The manager of the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) Strathcona Branch Adrienne Brown Canty and Erin Rayner.Dylan Glyn Liley, a Whyte Avenue merchant also attended on Sep 26 as prospective charter members.
The cost of the delicious freshly made muffins and pastry, fresh coffee and fruit is $12.

Past President Orville Sleen and President Peter Denooy is coordinating the formation of the new club. They are assisted by District 5370 Director of Membership, Shirley Lowe who is also the Managing Director of the Old Strathcona Business Association.

The proposed name for the club is the Rotary Club of Edmonton Festival City, and they are meeting on Wednesday mornings from 7:45 AM until 9 AM at the Strathcona Branch of the Edmonton Public Library on 8331 - 104 Street.

This location and meeting time was chosen to accomodate the many businesses in this area as well as people involved with the University of Alberta.

If you know of somebody who may be interested in joining this new club, please contact Peter Denooy at 780-984-1251 or Orville Sleen at 780-991-0276.

Members' Attendance Reports
by Hans Granholm

As we are approaching the end of the Rotary year (June 30), we want to be sure we have your attendance correctly reported for the year.

You are reminded that up to date records are available from the web site administration page after login any time. Click on the last item in the "My ClubRunner" section and chose reports #46 & 48. Open #46 first to see the percantage figure and if you do not agree, open #48 to see which meeting(s) are listed as missed.
Documents #40, 43 & 44 show various attendance reports for last year 2006-07.

If you do not report any discrepancies to me within the next two weeks, we will accept these reports as accurate.

Contact me anytime if you need assistance with the reports.

Cheers!

2007 Operation Red Nose Campaign
by Peter DeNooy

Planning for the 2007 campaign is already in full swing. The Steering Committee is meeting monthly and is working on an exciting PR and Fundraising Campaign.

The 2007 Steering Committee is chaired by Peter Denooy and is made up of Rotarians and seasoned ORN volunteers: Orville Sleen, Ted Griffiths, Peter Stoye, Lezley Zwaal, Eric DeKok, Carstens Schwank, Kathy Strawson and Gail Provan. Ian Brooks is our liaison with the Edmonton Police Service. We are very excited that The Rotary Clubs of Edmonton Urban Spirits, Fort Saskatchewan and Nisku-Leduc as well as The Rotaract Club of Edmonton Centre have committed to actively participate in the 2007 Campaign!

This program is an important component in our fundraising effort for youth programs, so be sure to support us in any way you can.

We will again operate from the fantastic facilities, located at 15220 - 114 Avenue, which are generously donated by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge 146 .

TIP about where
by Hans Granholm
When Stories disappear from the front page and the bulletin layout, they don't disappear completely.
You can always click on the STORIES tab in the menu bar in the top banner.

Items will remain there for a reasonable period of time (still to be determined), but even after they disappear there, they can still be retrieved by contacting your website administrator.

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!
