Tuesday noon belongs to Rotary!

Look in "Upcoming Events" for other activities taking place in the near future.

There has been low interest in the newly-proposed Rotary Club of edmonton Festival City.

At the board meeting on October 18, 2007, the following motion was passed: To ask the District to re-think the establishment of a new club in the Strathcona area and to request direction on how to achieve this purpose.

The club has spent about $ 500.00 so far, and it was the board's opinion that other means and ways were to be explored before spending more club funds.

In his presentation as guest speaker to the Club at the October 23rd meeting, Dr. Larry Ohlhauser, M.D., held our attention with his positive, energetic and realistic advice on personal health. Dr. Larry put a new 'spin' on the designation "M.D." when he suggested that most of us live our lives in "massive denial' when it comes to taking personal responsibility for our personal health.

In citing some of the following statistics and illustrating his own life experience as an example, he drove home the message that we are all personally responsible for the state of our well being. 

• 50% Canadians are overweight
• 20% are obese
• 80% of women live the last 11 years of their life in ill health
• 80% of men live the last 9 years of their life in ill health
• Heart attack, stroke and cancer of the colon are the chief causes of death
• personal wellness must include a balance of the physical wellness, relationship wellness and financial wellness

Two simple effective measures he recommended were to walk '10,000 steps a day' and to drink at least 6 bottles of water per day, steps which he guaranteed would bring about weight-loss for everyone.

In closing, he left members and guests with a final inspiring bit of advice: Drink those 6 bottles of water per day! Invest in a pedometer and get walking those 10,000 steps a day to better personal health!

Out of the Grey Cup but not the Community. 

In a recent presentation to the Club, Brad Morgan (Community Relations Coordinator for the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club) it was obvious that the citizens of Edmonton have reason to be  proud of the team and its contribution to our community and surrounding area. The 'game' is actually only one facet of their business. 

Eskimo involvement with "Champions of the community" is supported by Alberta Lotteries. There are 10 segments supported by the Edmonton Eskimo alumni, including Education, Environment, Health, Minor Football, Special events and Youth.

• "Raise a Reader" program. Supported by players who go out to some 40+ city schools to read to the students. This program ties into the "Tools for Schools" annual project (United Way) which has been and will continue to be coordinated by Ed Hervey.
• The "Stay in School" program has been in progress for 10 years with 60+ schools being served in 2006. There is ample evidence that the students are motivated by what the players have to say. The current plan is to expand the program to outlying areas.
• Environmental Program will be initiated in 2008 with a stadium 'green' program thru recyling and other initiatives.
• Health Program:  Fitness and nutrition will be the focus. Statistics and studies show that unless children today become more active, they will not outlive their parents.
• Leadership and Volunteerism:  Proceeds from 50/50 sales at regular Eskimo games are directed to the support of the two minor football teams - the Wildcats and the Huskies.
• Player Initiatives:  Kidney Foundation, Diabetes, Kids with Cancer
• Special Events:  Every summer Eskimos players host "Monday Morning Magic" (the first Monday of CapitalEX) in ensuring the safety and enjoyment for children with disabilities by providng one-on-one assistance during rides and other activities.
• Youth: currently working together with EPS and RCMP in the D.A.R.E program.
• The Alumni support organizations such as Rotary in donating funds or auction items for Rotary fundraising initiatives.

For those considering a Winter Cruise, several Eskimo players and their families, including Ed Hervey and Sean Fleming, are hosting a Mexican Riviera Cruise in January, 2008. Tours arranged through Carter Tours.

The 2007 campaign is getting closer! On November 14, 2007, at 2 pm this year's campaign will be announced to the community and the media at the Boilermakers at 15220 - 114 Avenue.

We will again operate from the fantastic facilities, located at 15220 - 114 Avenue, which are generously donated by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge 146 .
