Brrrrrr!
by
Granholm, Hans
Last
night (Dec 13) was a C O L D
one for all Operation Red Nose volunteers and in true spirit of the
program, nary a word of complaint, only heartwarming stories.
I had
the good fortune to be indoors at the comfortable International Brotherhood of Boilermakers at
the Head Quarters most of the evening/night/morning save for the
obligatory occasional starting your car and jump-start others' cars.
Thanks to
all our dedicated volunteers for going the extra mile.

NEW STOCK
MARKET TERMS
by
Hans Granholm
We have
often heard from rowing Rotarians, that making up attendance at other
clubs, whether they be local or international, is a great experience.
From the
recent notes and pictures, you know Ivan Docker is one of
them and while visiting the Rotary
Club of Brisbane Planetarium recently, he picked up a
copy of their weekly newsletter The
Daiy Planet, which Ivan shared with
me.
One page offered a new perspective on terms used in the financial world
and I thought it was 'a propos' in light of the current world financial
crisis.
CEO -
Chief Embezzlement Officer
CFO - Corporate Fraud Officer
COO - Chief Oops Officer
BULL MARKET - A random market movement causing an investor to mistake
himself for a financial genius.
BEAR MARKET - A 6- to 18-month period when the kids get no allowance
& the wife gets no jewellery.
VALUE INVESTING - The art of buying low and selling lower.
P/E RATIO - The percentage of investors wetting their pants as the market
keeps crashing.
BROKER - What my stock adviser has made me.
STANDARD AND POOR -Your life in a nutshell.
STOCK ANALYST - The idiot that just downgraded your stock.
STOCK SPLIT - When your ex and her lawyer split your assets equally
between themselves.
FINANCIAL PLANNER - A guy whose phone has been disconnected.
MARKET CORRECTION - The day AFTER you buy stocks.
CASH FLOW - The movement your money makes as it disappears down the
toilet. YAHOO - What you yell after selling it to some poor sucker for
$240.00 a share.
WINDOWS - What you jump out of when you're the sucker who bought Yahoo at
$240.00 a share.
INSTITUTIONAL INVESTOR - Past year investor who's now locked up in a nut
house.
PROFIT - An archaic word no longer in use.

Little Known Facts You Can Live Without
by
Hans Granholm
Q: Why is shifting
responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?
A: In card games, it was once
customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to
indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume
the responsibility, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.

Speaker Review
- Nov 25 - Minister Iris Evans
by
Jim Ashton
"How Fortunate Albertan's Are".... was the central theme espoused by
Alberta's Minister of Finance & Enterprise, the Honorable Iris
Evans, on her breakfast meeting presentation to the Edmonton Strathcona
Club and guests. This veteran MLA (elected in 1997) has handled the
portfolios of Municipal Affairs, Children's Services, Health &
Wellness, and Employment, Immigration & Industry before recently
being handed the reins as Finance Minister.
Minister Evans
stressed that the Province of Alberta is debt free, has the lowest
corporate tax rate, as well as the lowest personal income tax rate
in the country, and, as of January 1, 2009, it's citizens will have
no health care premiums to pay. Having said that, with a budget
based on a market price of $78/barrel, the Province will have to curb
it's spending with the current price at $50/barrel.
To fund a large capital fund such as the $2 B carbon capture program, the
government will draw down from the surplus of fiscal 2007 revenues.
Just to put into perspective what the shrinking market price means
in dollars and cents, the number budgeted for 2008 will bring in
some $6.5B less in oil and gas revenues!
Critical to the Province is to get a clean bill of health on emissions,
with carbon capture being a key component of the strategy. With a
whopping 41% of our revenues streaming in from oil and gas, the
Province has to quell the word going around in the international marketplace
that we produce "dirty oil". As Minister Evans stated,
referring to our resource as "tar sands" just exacerbates the
problem.
Due to the time constraints of a pending cabinet meeting, Minister Evans
cut her presentation short to allow for questions from the
floor. Some of the queries from the floor touched on health care,
deficit spending (NO, says the Minister), nuclear power, and the bullet
train issues (Edmonton to Calgary, Edmonton to Fort McMurray).
In her closing remarks, the Minister touched on Health Care, and what a
huge impact it has on our operating costs. She stated that
something as basic as awareness of how important each of us washing
our hands is, to reduce the spread of infections, etc.
While a relatively short presentation, the Minister's
experience showed through in presenting on topics critcal to Albertans.

Rotary Canada
Flag Project
by
Hal Quilliam
The Edmonton Strathcona
Rotary Club has commenced a new
fund raising project called
the Rotary Canada Flag Project.
The purpose of the project is to promote the demonstration of Patriotism
for Canada
by the subscribers and at the same time raise funds for charitable use
and use in the community by The Rotary Club.
The project follows the
precedent of similar successful flag projects by Rotary Clubs in the United States.
Under the project, Edmonton
Strathcona Rotarians will visit homeowners and occupants of residences,
and will obtain "Subscriptions" to the annual flag project.
The Rotary Club will provide
"plantings" of a Canada Flag on the front lawn of subscribers
three times per year in exchange for the subscription. The plantings will take place on the
three summer holidays weekends (Victoria Day) (Canada Day) and (Labour Day)
After the holiday is over the Rotary Club will pick up the flag
and store it for future use.
The subscription price is
$50.00 per year and the subscriber is only required to show the general
location of where the flag should be planted.
Planting takes place by
placing a metal stand in the ground on a spike, and is removed after the
weekend is over with no damage to the lawn. Continuing subscriptions will be
sought. Preparation of the flags,
poles and spikes will be done by Club members by way of work parties.
First plantings are expected
for Labor Day 2008.

Web Site Advertising
by
Hans Granholm
>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING
OPPORTUNITY <<<
With the
number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we
are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds
for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us
know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative,
please speak up.
A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available
to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support
the club's endeavors.
It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from
businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also
find prospective new Rotarians.
Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad
The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for
three months or $150.00 for one year.
For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter
or $250.00 for one year.
The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon
clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail
address.
Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of&n bsp;any
site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.
NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a
site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?".
This link opens a page with all the information.
Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on
the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.
Cheers!

Retrieve Your Metal Badges
by
Jim Ashton
With the transition
to the lanyards, there is a box containing the former metal
name badges in the cabinet (lower right hand side). In order
to try keep the cabinet fairly tidy, anyone
wishing to retain their old metal badge for a keepsake is asked to roo t around in the box and dig out their
badge. Any badges remaining come the start of 2009 will
be discarded. So, if you're a collector, dig in and retrieve
your old metal badge.

TIP about where
by
Hans Granholm
When Stories
disappear from the front page and the bulletin layout, they don't
disappear completely.
You can always click on the STORIES tab in the menu bar in the top
banner.
Items will remain there for a reasonable period of time (still to be
determined), but even after they disappear there, they can still be
retrieved by contacting your website administrator.
