EDMONTON URBAN DESIGN
by Len Gierach
Brief review of Pat Butler's Jan 8 2008 presentation

Edmonton Design Committee draws envy of other municipalities Living , working and playing in downtown Edmonton and connecting neighborhoods is being enhanced by the volunteer efforts of this unique collaborative group.
Three main principles direct their work:

1. To strive to create and restore the existing urban fabric within the metro region, create real communities and diverse districts, and conserve the natural environment and respect Edmonton's built legacy.

2. Exemplify design excellence by incorporating, translating and interpreting all three design principles to the greatest extent possible, consistent with best contemporary practices.

3. Demonstrate appropriate scale, integration of design elements and fit within the context of the precinct. The purpose of the committee is to raise the bar of archetecture design standards, in the private and public sector. Eleven members form a committee-in-council to support and encourage individuals to think "outside the box", and assisting development officers in the celebration of Edmonton. We were delighted to have Pat present great photographic examples during his presentation and look forward to seeing our home city with a new perspective.

Thank you !!!

Christmas Party 2007
by Ken Germain

December 11th at the Edmonton Country Club was once again a lovely evening. 65 members and guests shared good food and drinks and lots of fun. Diana Parker planned her birthday around this day and with Ted Griffiths was sung at by the noisy crowd. A singing trio called "Yule Time" was supplied by the Country Club as a pleasant surprise during the meal.

Rose Marie lead the 12 Days Of Christmas "wave" that involved each table rising, singing and acting out the gift item.. I wish "Turkey In the Straw" had been one of the days. Everyone had to do the 5 Golden Rings. Too funny! Rose Marie was joined by Dianne Sleen, Diana Parker, Heather Platt and Linda Granholm to sing a Christmas carol. This was answered by "Len and the Three Kennors" (Gierach, Sutley, Haverland and Germain). Buns and corks flew in appreciation!

The Christmas gift exchange went as usual...bedlam, grabbing and trickery. There were a surprising number of really NICE gifts?!

This event is always a great kick-off to the festive season for me. The setting, the laughs and the meal are coupled with the true feeling of friendship among a group that gets to know each other through work projects and fun events like this.

Check out the photos that Eric Germain took.

Harald Kuckertz
by Hans Granholm

I just spoke to Harald this morning (Jan 20), he's home and slowly going through a recovery process which will last for as long as it takes.
He is in good spirits, but the mornings are still difficult (I told him to cut down on the late night parties ;-)).
You are welcome to visit Harald, but phone him first, 780-464-5309. He is anxious to come to a meeting, but I told him to slow down and concentrate on getting his strength back.

Yours in Rotary.

"Rotary Day"
by Hans Granholm
An update to all Presidents, PE's and Secretaries, and ADG.

In November I met with the Capital Region Rotary Presidents where we identified the desire to market Rotary. We swapped ideas and took input and most agreed a "Rotary Day" made the most sense. The invitation was extended to clubs outside the Edmonton area to do likewise on their own, and if assistance is needed we can help in the PR department at District.

Since then things have really taken off in the Edmonton area in particular.

13 Edmonton area clubs have committed financially. 7 clubs have sent in checks. These funds go towards marketing "Rotary Day". In Edmonton "Rotary Day" will be a one day event where we buy media to promote Rotary Feb 26. The goal is threefold. Tell the average folk what Rotary does in the region and the world, make Rotarians feel great about being a member, enhance recruitment as a result.

In the Edmonton market Media buys will include both newspapers, radio, and possibly billboards and television to promote this event. Spillover will also occur where the Edmonton Journal and Sun are commonly distributed, and of course where Edmonton radio can be heard, usually within 100 k's or so of Edmonton, for intance Camrose. Radio will cross promote to the full page newspaper ads for "further details".

Our goal is for the Edmonton and areas clubs to raise around $25 000 to pay for the Edmonton area media, and we are well on the way. All monies will be directed through District office. Clubs have responded well with the idea, chipping in upwards to 20 or 30 dollars a head per member, but whatever your club can do is very welcome.

Rotary Day will wrap up in the Edmonton area with a multi club attendance meeting with a keynote speaker, but an inexpensive fun light evening to "celebrate Rotary".

Clubs in outlying areas are encouraged to be a part of this. We encourage clubs within the Capital region to contribute what they can, as you will enjoy the benefits of the media spill over in your town (Camrose for instance). Clubs further out may want to hold a similar event in your market, such as Fort St. John. If you want more details about the sort of message we plan for Rotary Day in Edmonton area, please ask me, and you can do similar in your market!

Some dollars may be available from District to assist your local media buys.

I am working with Les Reynolds, District 5370 Assistant Governor Team Leader, lesr@shaw.ca - If you have questions please hit reply or send comments to Les or your ADG.

Dr. Sim's 'Feed the Children in North Korea'
by Hans Granholm
*** Jeong Sim's report ***

"Feed homeless children in North Korea"

Famine is the one of the biggest problems in the world. The people of North Korea suffer from hunger on the level of the notorious Ethiopia famine. Children in particular just die in silence behind the world media. The Edmonton Strathcona Club has decided to raise food fund for the children home in Najin, North Korea

Brief history : In 2000, Dr. J. K.  Kim, President Yanbien University of Science and Technology (YUST), Jilin China visited Najin city, North Korea , gathered about 300 homeless children of 5 to 7 years of age begging in the street, housed them and feed them with his own fund. Now this home has grown to a large family of 535-children plus staffs. These children have to be fed otherwise no foods come to their empty stomach. This facility has been reputed as a heavenly place in Najin City to many hungry homeless children.

Management: This home is operated entirely with private donations and managed independently by YUST. One Canadian gentleman (Mr. C. H. Kim) , from Toronto has been in charge as an honorary director who is responsible for procuring foods at the China side and transporting foods by a truck to North Korea . No overhead cost is involved.

Current Financial Needs: the entire budget for the home is currently US$ 6900/month. This means mere 40 cents per child per day. There is an urgent issue though. I was told today that other children's home within the city limit was completely burnt down by an accidental fire about a month ago. About 300 children are temporally housed in a ware house facility. Dr. Kim asked for help to rebuild the home before hard winter season sets in.

Our Fund Raising Goal: The Strathcona Club (International Service Committee) began an active fund-raising drive to reach a projected goal $15,000 within this year (before Christmas) . This fund hopefully matched by other grants like the Wild Rose Foundation and/or CIDA. The committee is seeking helps from other clubs in the district for support and asking your active participation in this project.  Please pass this message along to your members , presidents and directors in the district. Checks in any amounts can be sent to ROTARY CLUB OF EDMONTON STRATHCONA , 8310 Roper Rd NW , Edmonton , AB T6E 6E3 .

Do you need a speaker: On behalf of Strathcona International Service Committee, Dr. Jeong Sim is volunteering to tell you all about it on the project. Just call (434-3053, 994-1343 Cell) or contact (jssim@ualberta.ca).

Wisdom to share:

  • He (God) defends the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing (Deuteronomy 10:18 ) .
  • Today is unique. It has never occurred before and it will never be repeated. At midnight it will end, quietly, suddenly, totally and forever. But the hours between now and then are opportunities with eternal possibilities ( Charles R. Swindoll)

2007 Operation Red Nose Campaign
by Peter DeNooy

The 2007 Campaign came to a very successful end early on January 1, 2008, after some 150 volunteers provided 165 rides to take people and their vehicles home safely after they celebrated the arrival of the new year.

I will provide more exact numbers at our next meeting, but it appears we have raised more money than last year thanks to our amazing volunteers, partners and sponsors!

We kept over 700 impaired drivers off the streets in the Greater Edmonton area, and that alone makes this wonderful program such a gratifying event.

I take off my hat to all those wonderful volunteers who have donated their evenings and nights to keep our community a safer place and to raise funds for the future of our country, our children.

Peter Denooy

A fair number of dedicated volunteers, including club members, attended the Volunteers Appreciation Breakfast  on Saturday, a fitting end to the successful 2007 Campaign.
The food was great and plentiful. President Peter gave a detailed report on the successful campaign and special thanks went out to our generous sponsors and partners.
Cathy Strawson Chair of the 2008 Steering Committee, and Peter handed out many prizes drawn at random throughout the morning.

We need to clean out the facilities at the Boilermakers and move material to our storage area donated by Sentinel. In order to organize and make room for the stovage, leftover material in the storage area needs to be cleaned out.
There are a lot of 'boat anchors' and 'paper weights' but there just might be the chair or desk or whatever you are looking for.

On Jan 26 we are arranging a work party to accomplish this and we will publish more details  in the next few days.

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!
