Dr. Sim's 'Feed the Children in North Korea'

"Feed homeless children in North Korea"
Famine is the one of the biggest problems in the world. The people of North Korea suffer from hunger on the level of the notorious Ethiopia famine. Children in particular just die in silence behind the world media. The Edmonton Strathcona Club has decided to raise food fund for the children home in Najin, North Korea
Brief history
: In 2000, Dr. J. K. Kim, President Yanbien University of Science and Technology (YUST),
Jilin
China
visited Najin city,
North Korea
, gathered about 300 homeless children of 5 to 7 years of age begging in the street, housed them and feed them with his own fund. Now this home has grown to a large family of 535-children plus staffs. These children have to be fed otherwise no foods come to their empty stomach. This facility has been reputed as a heavenly place in
Najin
City
to many hungry homeless children.
Management:
This home is operated entirely with private donations and managed independently by YUST. One Canadian gentleman (Mr. C. H. Kim) , from
Toronto
has been in charge as an honorary director who is responsible for procuring foods at the
China
side and transporting foods by a truck to
North Korea
. No overhead cost is involved.
Current Financial Needs:
the entire budget for the home is currently US$ 6900/month. This means mere 40 cents per child per day. There is an urgent issue though. I was told today that other children's home within the city limit was completely burnt down by an accidental fire about a month ago. About 300 children are temporally housed in a ware house facility. Dr. Kim asked for help to rebuild the home before hard winter season sets in.
Our Fund Raising Goal:
The Strathcona Club (International Service Committee) began an active fund-raising drive to reach a projected goal $15,000 within this year
(before Christmas)
. This fund hopefully matched by other grants like the Wild Rose Foundation and/or CIDA. The committee is seeking helps from other clubs in the district for support and
asking your active
participation in this project. Please pass this message along to

2007 Operation Red Nose Campaign

The 2007 Campaign came to a very successful end early on January 1, 2008, after some 150 volunteers provided 165 rides to take people and their vehicles home safely after they celebrated the arrival of the new year.
I will provide more exact numbers at our next meeting, but it appears we have raised more money than last year thanks to our amazing volunteers, partners and sponsors!
We kept over 700 impaired drivers off the streets in the Greater Edmonton area, and that alone makes this wonderful program such a gratifying event.
I take off my hat to all those wonderful volunteers who have donated their evenings and nights to keep our community a safer place and to raise funds for the future of our country, our children.

Plan to attend the Volunteer Appreciation breakfast taking place at the ORN Headquarters located at The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, 15220-114 Avenue NW from 0900 to 1100.
There will be door prizes and the draw for the LCD TV.

"Rotary Day"

 An update to all Presidents, PE's and Secretaries, and ADG.
In November I met with the Capital Region Rotary Presidents where we identified the desire to market Rotary. We swapped ideas and took input and most agreed a "Rotary Day" made the most sense. The invitation was extended to clubs outside the Edmonton area to do likewise on their own, and if assistance is needed we can help in the PR department at District.
Since then things have really taken off in the Edmonton area in particular.
13 Edmonton area clubs have committed financially. 7 clubs have sent in checks. These funds go towards marketing "Rotary Day". In Edmonton "Rotary Day" will be a one day event where we buy media to promote Rotary Feb 26. The goal is threefold. Tell the average folk what Rotary does in the region and the world, make Rotarians feel great about being a member, enhance recruitment as a result.
In the Edmonton market Media buys will include both newspapers, radio, and possibly billboards and television to promote this event. Spillover will also occur where the Edmonton Journal and Sun are commonly distributed, and of course where Edmonton radio can be heard, usually within 100 k's or so of Edmonton, for intance Camrose. Radio will cross promote to the full page newspaper ads for "further details".
Our goal is for the Edmonton and areas clubs to raise around $25 000 to pay for the Edmonton area media, and we are well on the way. All monies will be directed through District office. Clubs have responded well with the idea, chipping in upwards to 20 or 30 dollars a head per member, but whatever your club can do is very welcome.
Rotary Day will wrap up in the Edmonton area with a multi club attendance meeting with a keynote speaker, but an inexpensive fun light evening to "celebrate Rotary".
Clubs in outlying areas are encouraged to be a part of this. We encourage clubs within the Capital region to contribute what they can, as you will enjoy the benefits of the media spill over in your town (Camrose for instance). Clubs further out may want to hold a similar event in your market, such as Fort St. John. If you want more details about the sort of message we plan for Rotary Day in Edmonton area,please ask me, and you can do similar in your market!
Some dollars may be available from District to assist your local media buys.

Open #46 first to see the percentage figure and if you do not agree, open #48 to see which meeting(s) are listed as missed.
Documents #40, 43 & 44 show various attendance reports for last year 2006-07.
If you do not report any discrepancies to me within the next two weeks, we will accept these reports as accurate.

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.

How secure is all this data?

 No need to worry. ClubRunner secures all your private information using the latest security technologies.
Private information is secured using 128-bit encryption, and all access requires unique logins and passwords. Access to information is also restricted, for example, a member can only see a list of membership in his or her club, and his or her own personal information.
Data on the server is protected by TCP/IP filtering, firewall and anti-virus software that protect against any unauthorized intrusion. Backups of data are made daily and stored off-site.
