Speaker Review - June 17 - Ron Gilbertson
by Jim Ashton
Edmonton....Great in it's Own Right.....While Edmonton will never acheive the grandeur of London or Paris, the ambition of New York or Chicago, of the energy and bustle of Hong Kong or Tokyo, it has all the markings and potential to be a great "medium-sized city.

Ron Gilbertson, CEO of Edmonton Economic Development Authority, is quick to point out that Edmonton not only can be, but is destined to be one of the top two or three of the 307 medium-sized cities in the world.  To sustain this status will take vision, effort and co-operation - attributes that entrepreneureal Edmontonian's do not lack.  With perennial stats that lead our country in emplyment growth, GDP growth, disposable income growth, and housing starts, Edmonton has one of the world's stongest economies.

While having the critical resource of oil at our doorstep - defining Edmonton's economy for decades to come - our regional economy is well diversified, with an enviable mix of manufacturing, government, advanced technology and finance.  Edmonton's health care and post-secondary educational institutions are renowned not only nation wide, but beyond our countries borders as well. Add to the equation the clean environment, a world class park system, recreational and cultural options, and you can see where Ron is coming from with his bold statements.

However, to acheive this lofty status, "icebergs", as Ron calls them, must be successfully navigated around.  Four key issues that can impede development are 1) Environmental issues (fossil fuel development), 2) Shortages of skilled labor, 3) Inflationary pressure of rising costs and a strong Canadian dollar, and, 4) Regional co-operation issues that could discourage investment.

The Edmonton Economic Development Authority has created a council of the city's top business leaders to identify the obstacles the Edmonton region must oversome, and, to work in co-operation with political leaders and institutions to tackle key areas of concern to get to that level of greatness to which we aspire.  Most critical are:  1) Safety and security (high crime rate), 2)  Investments in transportation have failed to keep up with the region's growth, 3) Access to the city from outside the region needs to continue to improve, and, 4) The city''s image is not up to the standards of an emerging world-class city.

Gilbertson's take on addressing and imparting information on these issues would be to fix a problem and then do a public relations job touting that the problem has been handled.  "What if we do this right", he asks in closing.  Do it right and Edmonton will be one of the top three of the 307 mid-sized cities in the world.  Wow!

The presentation by Ron encapsulated a great amount of material in a tight time frame, yet it was cohesive, and he had a rapt audience taking it in.  Well done Mr. Gilbertson!

Jeong's heart is moved with Strathcona NK gift
by Jeong Sim

To begin with, let me tell you that Jeong, your little fellow Rotarian at the Strathcona club, was deeply moved with the love gift.  The whole proceeds generated from the golf tounament and BBQ party at the Kinsmen was dedicated for the food fund to feed hungry NK children.

Let me tell you how Jeong is grateful and deeply moved with a great compassion you have shown yesterday afternoon at the Kinsmen's club house. I will make sure how this love gift will be used and how it will impact on some fragile lives in that unfortunate corner of the world. It is a pure joy and encouragement for me gladly to continue Jeong's newly found post retirement journey.

Just for your information, 30 Canadian cents is capable of feeding one child with three decent meals. This means that >$600 can keep 2000 starving children's empty bellies filled. If One of those 2000 children might be nutritionally replenished and survived to a successfully functional adulthood, who might be able to do the same as you did, we all wishfully happy and  meaningful. Your compassion and prayers are in dire need.

My thank on behalf of millions hungry children around the world including NK children, goes to all members of Strathcona club, all participants of the Golf tounment. Last but not least, the lovely Germain brothers, Erick and Ken in particular, who organised and generated tons of fun are greatly appreciated with thanx from the bottom of our hearts. May God richly bless you.

I love you, Strathconians.

Annual Fun Golf/Bar-B-Q
by Hans Granholm

The Rotary Club of Edmonton Stathcona held it's 36th Annual Golf Tournament on June 10, 2008 at the Kinsmen Pitch & Putt Golf Course. This is the second year that the event was held at this venue, with the idea that it opens up this very social event to all Rotary Club members, friends and family.

CLICK THIS LINK to open the 'Annual Fun Golf photo album.

The golf course is nestled in the shadow of the High Level Bridge in central Edmonton. It is hard to believe that this idyllic location is located in the heart of our busy city. We had 26 golfers out for the event and were joined by 4 additional guests for the barbecue. The noted golf prize winners were Tom Williams low score (62), Doug Mulholland second lowest score (67), Eric Germain third lowest score (69) and the most honest golfer (highest score) Lorraine Skelly. Winners of the specific hole contests were Ron Dobbin and Doug Mulholland. Kelly Williams was the winner of the "Orville" Golf Ball contest, where players who use their original golf ball through the entire 18 holes enter a  draw. The winner of the prestigious "Most Lost Golf Balls" Trophy was Len Gierach

We were lucky to squeeze the event in on a rainy day. We actually teed off in sunshine and then had a variety of weather from hail, rain, tornado watch, back to sunshine, closed by a rain shower, with things clearing off for a lovely June evening. As the saying goes "If you don't like the weather wait for a few minutes" certainly proved true on this day. The golf course is a great test for even the accomplished golfer's short game for chipping and putting. An extra degree of difficulty was added with a few novel putters (hockey stick, plunger, golf driver, pool cue and a mop) just to make things interesting and to underscore the real intent of the event, fun and fellowship.

The barbecue was held at the Kinsmen clubhouse, which is a perfect venue for our club events such as the golf tournament. Bill Skelly did a great job in booking these venues for us again this year. Ken Germain arranged the food for the barbecue and had some hardworking volunteers helping prepare, serve and cleanup after the meal, notably Diana Parker, Lorraine Skelly and Nicolle Germain. Orville Sleen ran a great putting contest that was held inside at the clubhouse, with proceeds going to our designated charity. The winner was Jim Ashton, who generously donated his 50-50 winnings. The Germain Brothers provided an entertaining formal program of which the highlight was the presentation of $604 to Jeong Sim for his "Feed The Children Of North Korea" project, the designated charity of this year's Rotary Fun Golf Tourney.

This event is consistently a good time for everyone involved, and we already look forward to the 2009 Fun Golf Tourney. Thanks to our generous friends who donated prizes for the event most notably, Con Basaraba, Augie Annicchiarco, Ron Dobbin and Orville Sleen.

Les Reynolds has Resigned
by Hans Granholm

One of our hard working members. Les Reynolds has risigned his membership in The Edmonton Strathcona Rotary Club to join the new Edmonton Southeast Rotary Club.

Les is the District Director for Assistant Governors and an Assistant Governor for our club. He has spent considerable time in the formation of the new club that chartered on June 7th. In order to ensure an early success of the new club, he felt it more appropriate to provide guidance from within the club.

Les served our club as President in 2003-04 and spearheaded a very ambitious project in India.

We wish Les and the new club all the best.

P.S. The Edmonton Southeast club meets on Tuesdays at 1900 (7:00 pm) at the Cedar Park Inn on 51 Ave and Gateway Blvd.

TIP: Click on image to enlarge.

Dear friends,

Our trip to Canada is getting closer, being less than 2 months away. At this moment we are planning the activities with Peter (Stoye) and Les for our 3 week vacation. One thing we want to do, for sure, is to attend the Rotary meeting! And more than once is a great option too, depending on our plans of course.

My husband Mikko and I were thinking that maybe Mikko could have an interesting subject to talk about at the meeting. So do you think you would like to have him as a speaker for one of the meetings between July 19th and August 9th? I noticed you already had a speaker for atleast one of those days. Mikko could talk about the Finnish Air Force and the NH-90 helicopter project.

I wasn't sure who is responsible for scheduling the speakers, but I thought through you three this idea would get forwarded... And for Mr. Stoye: add at least one Rotary meeting to our schedule in case it starts getting crowded...  ;)

See you all soon!

- Heidi & Mikko

Editor's note: Mikko is the scheduled speaker at the August 5 meeting. (see Future Speakers schedule)

No Child Should Die Hungry and Alone.

Imagine a modern country where nearly 40 per cent of children under six die of starvation. Severe famine has hit North Korea , and its people are suffering in silence . North Korea's 23 million people need 6 million tones of food to eat well, but they have been able to produce barely half that much. People are chronically malnourished, and many die-especially the children (always the most vulnerable in any society). Without your help-immediately-an entire generation may perish. You can save three children's lives this year for about what you pay for the daily newspaper! Think about that.

I became involved two years ago, when I was invited to lecture on "Nutrition for Health" at the Yanbian University of Science and Technology (YUST) in Yanji, China, near North Korean border. Since 2003, this university has gathered hungry children and housed and fed them-gave them a chance a future, in short. With them, I help procure food in China and made weekly delivers by trucks to those hungry children in Rajin City, North Korea-with no overhead costs!

In another border city, a once-rich potato production area is now completely isolated without food and fuel. YUST received a desperate plea to help some 10,000 starving children, who simply will not survive another harsh cold winter unless without immediate help. You can save these children with a donation of only 30 cents per child per day. That is all it takes. I am thrilled to report that to date, we have managed to raise $8,000 and $30,000 in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Thanks to all of the donnors who helped to make Feed NK Children project possible. Please know that you have been a part of something that is making a direct impact on the lives of the most vulnerable and helpless children in North Korea. Not only are they given food, keep them alive, but many of them are given a chance to recover from almost near-death malnutrition to a normal status for development as long as their bellies are filled with foods.

The Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona has adopted "Feed NK Children" as its international project. Please help by sending your cheques made payable to "Rotary Project of Feed NK Children" to the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona, 8310 Roper Rd. N.W., Edmonton, AB T6E 6E3. OR  you may send checks endorsing Jeong Sim's NK Children project to, NEAFoundation-Canada (North East Asia Foundation), 67 Scarsdale Rd, North York, Ontario M3B 2R2 (1-647-999-9160).

You will also receive a reminder about your committment by email on the preceding Monday.
Leo has a list of the Ride Schedule and will contact you in the event he is unable to go to a particular meeting.
If your plans change, please contact me immediately

In addition to the MAP on "Leo's Buggy Ride" event page, Jim Ashton is passing the following tips on to future 'Riders':

"Just a few notes on Leo's ride.  I hadn't opened up the map, but instead Leo gave me the logistics.

Coming into Beaumont from Edmonton on 50th street, drive through the town to the large church (on the left hand side) at the lights.  Turn left at the lights and drive to the first stop sign.  Turn right at the stop sign and go to 46th avenue.  Turn left at 46th avenue.  Leo's home is the fourth one down on the right hand side - 4213.

The time that works for Leo is pick-up at 11:10 AM.
Leo pointed out a couple of bumps to watch for, so I questioned whether the vehicle impacting rough road hurts him.  It does.  So, a tip to the drivers --avoid any uneccessary bumps or potholes."

Leo really enjoys the opportunity to get out and attend the meetings.

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!
