Pajama Party
by Hans Granholm

Rotary Wives:

The planned pajama party hosted by Lorraine Skelly and Joan Freeman on November 27th @ 7:30p.m., was cancelled because only a few phoned to confrim their participation.

You can still make donations -- bring your gifts to any of our meetings and Dennis will collect.

Pajamas are still needed by the Lurana Shelter, a safe haven for women. Also always needed are toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and shampoo. Small toys and books for children are appreciated too.
Please don't wrap your gifts. A friend who volunteers at the shelter will be here to share information with us.

Any questions, please contact Lorraine @ 434-5257 or Joan @ 437-5464.

Little Known Facts You Can Live Without
by Hans Granholm

Q: Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

A: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. And that's where women's buttons have remained since.

2008 Casino THANK YOU
by Hans Granholm

Thank you all for volunteering your time to make the 2009 Casino a success.

At press time, I do not have facts and figures, but early indications are that we will be contributing above average to the casino resource pool for the third quarter of 2008.

Speaker Review - Nov 25 - Minister Iris Evans
by Jim Ashton

"How Fortunate Albertan's Are".... was the central theme espoused by Alberta's Minister of Finance & Enterprise,  the Honorable Iris Evans, on her breakfast meeting presentation to the Edmonton Strathcona Club and guests.  This veteran MLA (elected in 1997) has handled the portfolios of Municipal Affairs, Children's Services, Health & Wellness, and Employment, Immigration & Industry before recently being handed the reins as Finance Minister.

Minister Evans stressed that the Province of Alberta is debt free, has the lowest corporate tax rate, as well as the lowest personal income tax rate in the country, and, as of January 1, 2009, it's citizens will have no health care premiums to pay.  Having said that, with a budget based on a market price of $78/barrel, the Province will have to curb it's spending with the current price at $50/barrel.  To fund a large capital fund such as the $2B carbon capture program, the government will draw down from the surplus of fiscal 2007 revenues.  Just to put into perspective what the shrinking market price means in dollars and cents, the number budgeted for 2008 will bring in some $6.5B less in oil and gas revenues!

Critical to the Province is to get a clean bill of health on emissions, with carbon capture being a key component of the strategy.  With a whopping 41% of our revenues streaming in from oil and gas, the Province has to quell the word going around in the international marketplace that we produce "dirty oil".  As Minister Evans stated, referring to our resource as "tar sands" just exacerbates the problem.

Due to the time constraints of a pending cabinet meeting, Minister Evans cut her presentation short to allow for questions from the floor.  Some of the queries from the floor touched on health care, deficit spending (NO, says the Minister), nuclear power, and the bullet train issues (Edmonton to Calgary, Edmonton to Fort McMurray).

In her closing remarks, the Minister touched on Health Care, and what a huge impact it has on our operating costs.  She stated that something as basic as awareness of how important each of us washing our hands is, to reduce the spread of infections, etc.

While a relatively short presentation, the Minister's experience showed through in presenting on topics critcal to Albertans.

News from Sue and Ivan
by Hans Granholm

Received Ivan's note after press time last Sunday:

We are leaving Melbourne for Adelaide this morning (Nov 16) where we will spend 6 days (2 days on Kangaroo Island, where we overnight at a B & B that is a working sheep farm), before spending our last week in Sydney.

We have had a fantastic adventure so far:  2 weeks in the Cook Islands, and the last 5 weeks in Australia: the trip to Kakadu National Park, near Darwin) was a hot with temperatures reaching 36 C; and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef was very spectacular.  We had two weeks in Brisbane with our good friend Peter Bray, whom I worked with at Sun Life in Montreal (we had not seen him for 17 years, since we were last in Australia), and spent the last week with him at a holiday apartment hotel on the Gold Coast.

I have had some wonderful Rotary Makeups in the Cook Islands, Cairns, Brisbane, and Melbourne, and plan to attend a meeting this week in Adelaide.

Sue & I enjoyed an evening of Scottish Country Dancing last Saturday in Melbourne, and hope to go dancing with a group in Adelaide.

Looking forward to seeing you at Rotary the first week in December.

TTFN,  Sue & Ivan

(Editor note: Anybody know what TTFN means?)

Project Fair Report
by Bruce Kemp

In October, I traveled to Ecuador to attend a Rotary Project Fair in Manta.  I had the opportunity to visit with 24 Rotary Clubs and saw more than 75 projects. These projects focused on health, education, water and sanitation. With so many projects it was hard to decide what to focus on but I presented to the Board one of the projects which is to provide latrines for 75 families in the community of Tarqui which is just outside Cuenca.  The project requires $25,000 USD and is being administered locally by the Rotary Club of Mamba. Our club will be one of the partners in this project along with others. I will be working on securing all the funding for this project over the next couple of months.

Last year our club donated funds to provide two portable dental kits and chairs to the Tomebamba Rotary Club in Cuenca which will be used by the annual dental program in January as well as by other dentists through the year. The local Rotary Club has signed an agreement with the dental school in Cuenca to provide students with the opportunity to practice their skills. They will visit the rotary supported schools throughout the year.

I also visited three new schools around the Cuenca area including one that needs a new building. The Tomebamba Rotary Club is raising the money locally to buy the materials needed. I have offered to bring a team of Rotarians down to Ecuador to assist with the physical build when they are ready. I will inform the club when I hear more.

The trip was a great one and allowed me to connect with many Rotarians in Ecuador working hard to improve the quality of life for their people and also to meet other international Rotarians.

Greeting from Jeong and Joo in China
by Jeong Sim

Dear Rotarian Friends:
Well, it has been sometime since I left Edmonton in the last late summer. An automatic reminder by Hans has reached me without mistake every Tuesday, telling me that Jeong just missed the Rotary lunch meeting. Even though this is an automatic email message set by Hans,  it often give me a pleasure and joy to receive. It seems like hi from you guys. I want you know that Joo and I miss you the Rotary this much.

Everything has been going well as planned here in China. I rather not spell out in detail this time but a few photo are attached for you to share. Some of those pictures speak of thousand words itself. Hopefully to see you soon in person when I get there. Simply let me thank you again for your undivided supports and trust. Please remember us in your daily thoughts. Keep us in there. That is a best protection I can get. Love you.

2008-09 Exchange Student
by Granholm, Hans

We are very excited to resume our participation in the Rotary Youth Exchange program, one of the best and most rewarding programs in Rotary.

Anna Piela arrived on August 12 from Finland.

Anna is sponsored by District 1410 and we are sharing Anna with the Rotary Club of Edmonton South. She will be attending Strathcona High School.

Co-hosting a foreign student is a wonderful opportunity to learn about other cultures by including the student in your family and social activities.

Rotary Canada Flag Project
by Hal Quilliam

The Edmonton Strathcona Rotary Club has  commenced a new fund raising project called

the Rotary Canada Flag Project.

The purpose of the project is to promote the demonstration of Patriotism for Canada by the subscribers and at the same time raise funds for charitable use and use in the community by The Rotary Club.

The project follows the precedent of similar successful flag projects by Rotary Clubs in the United States.

Under the project, Edmonton Strathcona Rotarians will visit homeowners and occupants of residences, and will obtain "Subscriptions" to the annual flag project.

The Rotary Club will provide "plantings" of a Canada Flag on the front lawn of subscribers three times per year in exchange for the subscription.  The plantings will take place on the three summer holidays weekends (Victoria Day)  (Canada Day) and (Labour Day)   After the holiday is over the Rotary Club will pick up the flag and store it for future use.

The subscription price is $50.00 per year and the subscriber is only required to show the general location of where the flag should be planted.

Planting takes place by placing a metal stand in the ground on a spike, and is removed after the weekend is over with no damage to the lawn.  Continuing subscriptions will be sought.  Preparation of the flags, poles and spikes will be done  by Club members by way of  work parties.

First plantings are expected for Labor Day 2008.

Leo McCloskey Buggy Ride
by Hans Granholm

We have set up a volunteer ride system for Leo to enable him to attend our regular Tuesday meetings.

Open this  LINK to the volunteering page. You will be prompted to log in. Simply select the day you want to drive Leo. You will be reminded about your committment at the bottom of the e-Strathconian of your task, or you can always check your Tasks and Registrations from the 'My Committments' link in the My ClubRunner box on the ADMIN page after login.
If you are unable to open the 'Volunteer' page but want to volunteer, contact me any time.

You will also receive a reminder about your committment by email on the preceding Monday.
Leo has a list of the Ride Schedule and will contact you in the event he is unable to go to a particular meeting.
If your plans change, please contact me immediately

In addition to the MAP on "Leo's Buggy Ride" event page, Jim Ashton is passing the following tips on to future 'Riders':

"Just a few notes on Leo's ride.  I hadn't opened up the map, but instead Leo gave me the logistics.

Coming into Beaumont from Edmonton on 50th street, drive through the town to the large church (on the left hand side) at the lights.  Turn left at the lights and drive to the first stop sign.  Turn right at the stop sign and go to 46th avenue.  Turn left at 46th avenue.  Leo's home is the fourth one down on the right hand side - 4213.

The time that works for Leo is pick-up at 11:10 AM.
Leo pointed out a couple of bumps to watch for, so I questioned whether the vehicle impacting rough road hurts him.  It does.  So, a tip to the drivers --avoid any uneccessary bumps or potholes."

Leo really enjoys the opportunity to get out and attend the meetings.

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!

Retrieve Your Metal Badges
by Jim Ashton

With the transition to the lanyards, there is a box containing the former metal name badges in the cabinet (lower right hand side).  In order to try keep the cabinet fairly tidy, anyone wishing to retain their old metal badge for a keepsake is asked to root around in the box and dig out their badge.  Any badges remaining come the start of 2009 will be discarded. So, if you're a collector, dig in and retrieve your old metal badge.
