All shifts have now been filled -- THANK YOU!

All shift volunteers have received a reminder with details about their shift(s) by email. Please contact us if you have not received an advice.

Those of you who signed up as 'Spares', please note that we still have some juggling to finalize the shift schedules and we may still prevail upon you.

I am sure I do not need to remind you that this is a major fundraiser for our club and it require participation from ALL able bodies. It is our goal to recruit enough volunteers to allow us to 'single-shift' the signed up volunteers.

The various volunteer positions are created in the TASK Manager and you will be able to pick your own position and shift by clicking on the VOLUNTEERING link above.

If you have any concerns or questions, contact Hans Granholm anytime.

Remembrance Day.
by Granholm, Hans

Why the Poppy?

Today, fields of brilliant poppies still grow in France.
A writer first made the connection between the poppy and battlefield deaths during the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century, remarking that fields that were barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended.

During the tremendous bombardments of the First World War the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing 'popaver rhoeas' to thrive. When the war ended the lime was quickly absorbed, and the poppy began to disappear again.

After John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields was published in 1915 the poppy became a popular symbol for soldiers who died in battle.

Three years later an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield.

During a 1920 visit to the United States a French woman, Madame Guerin, learned of the custom. On her return to France she decided to use handmade poppies to raise money for the destitute children in war-torn areas of the country. In November, 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada.

Thanks to the millions of Canadians who wear flowers each November, the little red plant has never died. And neither have Canadian's memories for 116,031 of their countrymen who died in battle.
Greeting from Jeong and Joo in China
by Jeong Sim

Dear Rotarian Friends:
Well, it has been sometime since I left Edmonton in the last late summer. An automatic reminder by Hans has reached me without mistake every Tuesday, telling me that Jeong just missed the Rotary lunch meeting. Even though this is an automatic email message set by Hans,  it often give me a pleasure and joy to receive. It seems like hi from you guys. I want you know that Joo and I miss you the Rotary this much.

Everything has been going well as planned here in China. I rather not spell out in detail this time but a few photo are attached for you to share. Some of those pictures speak of thousand words itself. Hopefully to see you soon in person when I get there. Simply let me thank you again for your undivided supports and trust. Please remember us in your daily thoughts. Keep us in there. That is a best protection I can get. Love you.

Jeong and Joo

2008-09 Exchange Student
by Granholm, Hans

We are very excited to resume our participation in the Rotary Youth Exchange program, one of the best and most rewarding programs in Rotary.

Anna Piela arrived on August 12 from Finland.

Anna is sponsored by District 1410 and we are sharing Anna with the Rotary Club of Edmonton South. She will be attending Strathcona High School.

Co-hosting a foreign student is a wonderful opportunity to learn about other cultures by including the student in your family and social activities.

Please contact Don Henry h: 780-444-3746; b: 780-438-4208; e: dhenry@jimplease.com for more information.

Rotary Canada Flag Project
by Hal Quilliam

The Edmonton Strathcona Rotary Club has  commenced a new fund raising project called

the Rotary Canada Flag Project.

The purpose of the project is to promote the demonstration of Patriotism for Canada by the subscribers and at the same time raise funds for charitable use and use in the community by The Rotary Club.

The project follows the precedent of similar successful flag projects by Rotary Clubs in the United States.

Under the project, Edmonton Strathcona Rotarians will visit homeowners and occupants of residences, and will obtain "Subscriptions" to the annual flag project.

The Rotary Club will provide "plantings" of a Canada Flag on the front lawn of subscribers three times per year in exchange for the subscription.  The plantings will take place on the three summer holidays weekends (Victoria Day)  (Canada Day) and (Labour Day)   After the holiday is over the Rotary Club will pick up the flag and store it for future use.

The subscription price is $50.00 per year and the subscriber is only required to show the general location of where the flag should be planted.

Planting takes place by placing a metal stand in the ground on a spike, and is removed after the weekend is over with no damage to the lawn.  Continuing subscriptions will be sought.  Preparation of the flags, poles and spikes will be done  by Club members by way of  work parties.

First plantings are expected for Labor Day 2008.

Leo McCloskey Buggy Ride
by Hans Granholm

We have set up a volunteer ride system for Leo to enable him to attend our regular Tuesday meetings.

Open this  LINK to the volunteering page. You will be prompted to log in. Simply select the day you want to drive Leo. You will be reminded about your committment at the bottom of the e-Strathconian of your task, or you can always check your Tasks and Registrations from the 'My Committments' link in the My ClubRunner box on the ADMIN page after login.
If you are unable to open the 'Volunteer' page but want to volunteer, contact me any time.

You will also receive a reminder about your committment by email on the preceding Monday.
Leo has a list of the Ride Schedule and will contact you in the event he is unable to go to a particular meeting.
If your plans change, please contact me immediately

In addition to the MAP on "Leo's Buggy Ride" event page, Jim Ashton is passing the following tips on to future 'Riders':

"Just a few notes on Leo's ride.  I hadn't opened up the map, but instead Leo gave me the logistics.

Coming into Beaumont from Edmonton on 50th street, drive through the town to the large church (on the left hand side) at the lights.  Turn left at the lights and drive to the first stop sign.  Turn right at the stop sign and go to 46th avenue.  Turn left at 46th avenue.  Leo's home is the fourth one down on the right hand side - 4213.

The time that works for Leo is pick-up at 11:10 AM.
Leo pointed out a couple of bumps to watch for, so I questioned whether the vehicle impacting rough road hurts him.  It does.  So, a tip to the drivers --avoid any uneccessary bumps or potholes."

Leo really enjoys the opportunity to get out and attend the meetings.

Web Site Advertising
by Hans Granholm

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!

Retrieve Your Metal Badges
by Jim Ashton

With the transition to the lanyards, there is a box containing the former metal name badges in the cabinet (lower right hand side).  In order to try keep the cabinet fairly tidy, anyone wishing to retain their old metal badge for a keepsake is asked to root around in the box and dig out their badge.  Any badges remaining come the start of 2009 will be discarded. So, if you're a collector, dig in and retrieve your old metal badge.
TIP about where
by Hans Granholm

When Stories disappear from the front page and the bulletin layout, they don't disappear completely.
You can always click on the STORIES tab in the menu bar in the top banner.

Items will remain there for a reasonable period of time (still to be determined), but even after they disappear there, they can still be retrieved by contacting your website administrator.
