My fellow Strathconians.
by Hans Granholm

This issue of eStrathconian is composed, compiled and dispatched by your new Bulletin Editor, Peter Denooy.

Peter has graciously volunteered to take on that responsibility leaving me more time to pursue other challenges in the District and our Zone 24.

Change for the sake of change is not necessarily effective, but this change will benefit all of us, and our members in particular.
New ideas and a new or different approach to a specific task will make the product more attractive and I have every confidence that Peter will do a marvelous job keeping us informed in a timely fashion.

I encourage all of you to assist Peter by sending him news items about club and personal matters.

I am satisfied of what we as a club have accomplished the last five years in spearheading electronic communication in our District 5370 by being the trendsetter and model for others.

Three years ago the District created a new 'District Award', the Hans Granholm Award.

This award seeks to recognize clubs in the District who demonstrates leadership in promoting electronic communication and information sharing by utilizing the internet and our website club management system, ClubRunner, in the most effective manner.

I am proud that The Edmonton Strathcona Rotary Club received this award the last two years.

I thank you for your support and encouragement in the past and hope I will still be able to count on you in the future.

Cheers!

Hans Granholm

Editors comment:  Thank you, Hans, for all you do for Rotary, and especially our club.

Bruce Flesher Waving Flags on TV
by Peter DeNooy

Edmontonian revives patriotism with flags

Almost all the residents on Blackburn Drive W have put up large Canadian flags on their front lawn

As seen on CTV Edmonton News July 1, 2009 at 6 pm.

It started with one resident and after a little encouragement an entire residential block in Strathcona beamed with patriotism after putting up large Canadian flags on their front lawns.

Humble Canadians normally reserve them only for Canada Day, but one Edmontonian says it's important to fly the maple leaf year-round.

"It makes me feel wonderful," said Bruce Flesher, Strathcona resident and Rotary Club member.

Flesher has single handedly encouraged his neighbours on Blackburn Drive West to be a little more patriotic and install flagpoles on their front yards.

"Almost every house on our street has a flag," said Flesher. "That's brought a lot of people to my door to say how can I get a flag as well."

As a snowbird in the winter, Flesher got the idea from his Rotary Club in Texas. He says it didn't take long before the Strathcona Rotary Club sold almost 350 flags.

"I thought it was a little strange, but every since he's done it and it's been out there I've really liked it," said neighbour Grant Ainsley. "You come down the street and there's all these flags; it's great."

Flesher says he and his neighbours put out the flags three times a year: May long weekend, Canada Day and September long weekend.

Flesher is now hoping the trend will spread across the country.

"Who knows, it could go across Alberta or even across Canada," he said.

Bruce Flesher Made a Hole-in-one!!!!!!
by Peter DeNooy

The golf highlight of this year's golf tournament was the first hole in one ever recorded, in the long history of our Rotary Club golf tournaments. Bruce "Ace' Flesher made the perfect golf shot on hole #3, a 77 yard hole from a tricky elevated tee box.
Fun Golf Tournament
by Peter DeNooy

The Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona held their annual Fun Golf & Barbecue on June 30, 2009 at the Kinsmen Pitch & Putt Golf Course, nestled in the EdmontonRiverValley, under the shadow of the High Level bridge. The weather threatened to rain on our friendly golf crew, but the clouds blew by, and it turned out to be a lovely blue sky sunny day. The family theme was very evident, as we had the pleasure of a number of Rotary member's children and spouses joining us for the day. It was the first time golfing, for a number of the younger golfers on the day, and underscores our motto "A great walk spoiled by a little white ball"! This is an event that everyone is welcome to participate in, and the course lends itself very well to novice golfers. Having said that, the course also challenges the most experienced golfer's short game.

The golf highlight was the first hole in one ever recorded, in the long history of our Rotary Club golf tournaments. Bruce "Ace"Flesher made the perfect golf shot on hole #3, a 77 yard hole from a tricky elevated tee box. The shot also made him the clear cut winner of the closest to the pin contest on that specific hole. Congratulations Bruce on this magical moment for any golfer.

Ken Haverland won the longest putt contest on hole # 9, and Peter Denooy drained the long putt on hole #18. Luckily neither one of them had to use one of the novelty putters (eg. canoe paddle, pool cue, baseball batt, etc.) on those specific greens!

Judy Ashton won the reverse draw for the "Orville", all the golf balls that survived the round.

The low score of the day was carded by Larry Sales with a 64, edging out Jim Ashton who shot a 65. The best ladies score was a 67 by Judy Ashton. Eric de Kok had the dubious pleasure of winning the "Most Lost Golf Balls" Trophy.

After the golf all headed over to the nearby Kinsmen River Valley Place Hall for the barbecue, putting contest and presentations.

The burgers were cooked up and dinner was served, with our special guests from the Rotary Club of Edmonton South East joining us for the festivities. Ken Germain did a nice job of arranging the menu, recruiting the kitchen helpers, and adapting to the short notice increase in attendees.

A tradition of the Rotary Golf Tournament is the Putting Contest. We had 28 contestants in the line up for this year's contest. When the dust settled Charter President John Germain proved that golf is a game for life, as he clinched the victory.

MC Eric Germain dusted off some new golf joke material ("Columbus went around the world in 1492. That isn't a lot of strokes when you consider the course" unquote Lee Trevino), and kept the show rolling. Ken Haverland did a terrific job of using his auctioneer talents to auction off a golf bag. All the proceeds (estimated a $500 plus) from this year's golf tournament are to support the Rotary Shelterbox Program.

A special thank you to all the companies and Rotary Club members who donated prizes for this year's golf tournament. Thank you is also in order for Bill Skelly who lined up the Kinsmen Pitch & Putt Golf Course and the River Valley Hall.  Also thank you Jarrod Clayton this year's golf tournament Chairman. And thank you to everyone who came out to make this another terrific club & golf day!

Check out the pictures in the photo journal.

Recognizing Stroke Symptoms
by Ken Haverland

INFORMATION EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW........
B
lood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R.

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word.
I agree.

If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.
Seriously..

Please read:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *
Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *
Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R
* Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other
, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I have done my part. Will you?

Hugh Falconar needs a ride!
by Hans Granholm

Sometime in June 2009, Jarrod Clayton is moving his office into Harald Kuckertz's building in the Old Strathcona area.

This will effectively take him out of the 'Hugh Buggy Ride' pool where he and a number of other Strathconians have provide a ride for Hugh for several years now.

It would be nice if we could line up alternate drivers to take Hugh to our weekly meetings.

Hugh lives at: #220, 17203 99 Ave NW and his telephone number is: 780-487-9447

Initially I would suggest you contact me and let me try and arrange a schedule.

Cheers!

>>> PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY <<<

With the number of members in this club either owning or operating a business, we are getting a very poor interest in this nice little generator of funds for the club.
Are the rates too steep? I don't think so, but if you do, please let us know.
If you have any bright ideas on how to promote this little initiative, please speak up.

A web site and bulletin advertising feature is available to dedicated members who wish to sponsor an ad and support the club's endeavors.

It is an opportunity to go out in the community and solicit ads from businesses, and who knows, in the process of soliciting ads you may also find prospective new Rotarians.

Be sure to visit these sponsors by clicking on their ad

The fee is for members $20.00 for one month or $50.00 for three months or $150.00 for one year.

For non-members $30.00 per month or $70.00 for a quarter or $250.00 for one year.

The ad can be text or a logo. Either way it becomes a link and upon clicking will take the visitor to the sponsor's website or e-mail address.

Please have a look at the complimentary ads in the right column of any site pages and in the left column of the e-Strathconian.

NOTE: You will notice a link in the bottom of the right column of a site page "Interested in being a Website Sponsor?". This link opens a page with all the information.

Feedback and comments are very much appreciated. You can post comments on the FORUMS | CLUB WEB SITE | ADVERTISING. Or you can e-mail you-know-who.

Cheers!
