List of Vaccines To be Used
During Bellaire/Southwest Houston Rotary's
2006 Immunization Initiative -
Gulfton
IPV
-
Inactivated Polio
Vaccine There are two types of polio vaccine: Inactivated polio
vaccine, called IPV, which is given as a shot (the polio virus used in this
vaccine is killed); and live oral polio vaccine, called OPV, which is a liquid
that is swallowed (the virus used in this vaccine is attenuated or weakened).
Currently the U.S. uses only IPV.
DTaP -
Diphtheria,
Tetanus, Acellular Pertussis (for under 7 years old) DTaP is a
safer version of the older "DTP" shot because it contains
non-viable (acellular) pertussis virus.
Tdap -
Tetanus,
Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis (for over 7 yrs old). Tdap adds the safer
non-viable (acellular) pertussis component to the Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria)
vaccination given to children older than seven. Capitalization reflects that
Tdap is made with less diphtheria and pertussis toxoids than DTaP (hence, the
small "d" and "p"). Tdap is new this year and will be given instead of Td
(Tetanus, Diphtheria) to children older than seven unless, for whatever reason,
e.g., previous adverse reaction, a child should not receive even acellular
Pertussis.
Td
-
Tetanus,
Diphtheria (for over 7
years old). For those persons over 7 who (for one reason or another) should not
receive even the acellular Pertussis component in the new Tdap vaccine.
Hep A
Hepatitis A vaccine
Hepatitis A does not cause long-term illness, and it is transmitted by eating
infected food, drinking infected water, or by failing to wash hands that have
come into contact with the same.
Hep B
Hepatitis B vaccine
Hepatitis B causes serious long-term illness such as cirrhosis (scarring)
of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. Similar to AIDS, Hepatitis
B Virus is primarily transmitted by contact with infected blood and blood
products. Note: No vaccine is available for deadly Hepatitis C.
HIB
Haemophilus influenzae type
b (Hib) Vaccine prevents bacterial meningitis.
PPD
-
Tuberculin
Purified Protein Derivative. This is a test, not a vaccine. Results must be
followed up and interpreted within 24-48 hours. WE NEED A VOLUNTEER PHYSICIAN OR
CLINIC TO WHICH TO REFER PARTICIPANTS FOR THE FOLLOW-UP - Contact
Nan Wagoner if you have an
appropriate referral.
Meningococcal
Vaccine prevents some types of
NON-Hib Meningitis.
May or may not be available for Rotary Event because supplies are
currently limited.
MMR
- Measles,
Mumps, Rubella Vaccine. MMR Autism
Issues. Vacsafe/Concerns/Autism/MMR
Influenza
Flu Shot - for those under 18 years only
PCV7
Pneumococcal vaccine
(also called Prevnar) protects against the 7
most common types of pneumonia, which account for 80% of pneumococcal disease in
young children.
Varicella
- Varicella vaccine prevents
Chicken Pox,
which can be deadly.
Pediarix
-
Pediarix
is a new vaccine that combines the DTaP, IPV
(polio), and Hep B vaccines into one shot for infants. Fewer shots, slightly
increased side-effect risks.
