Tom Litchfield, Program Speaker March 9th
Tom Litchfield received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont and his Master's degree from the University of Georgia. Tom worked for about five years with the state of Georgia and then moved west to Utah where he worked for the Utah DWR for five and a half years and then on up to Montana where he worked for the Montana FWP for about 10 years. In Utah and Montana he served as regional coordinator for deer and mountain lions, among other species and duties. Tom took his current position with the Iowa DNR in 2007 and moved here from Montana in September of that year.
Tom's talk will be on "Iowa Deer Management and Herd Status with a Look at Lucas County".

India is No Longer Polio Endemic
The World Health Organization has officially removed India from the list of polio-endemic countries. India's last reported case was a two-year old girl in West Bengal State on January 13, 2011. Before polio eradication can be certified in India, it must go two more years without another case of the disease. Polio remains endemic in only three countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
Rotary International has played a major role in helping to stop the transmission of polio in India. Rotary has been a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative since 1988, along with WHO, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is also a key supporter of the initiative.

Parents and Children First Luncheon, March 15th
The Lucas County Child Abuse Prevention Council (Parents and Children First) is preparing for their annual theme basket fundraiser. The fundraiser is used for matching grants received from Prevent Child Abuse Iowa.
On March 15th, a luncheon from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. will be held at Carpenter's Hall for the public. Please plan to attend and support this very worthy cause.

RYLA, April 17, 2012
Sophomores Emma Fuhs, daughter of Rotarian Veronica Fuhs and Paul Opheim, the son of Rotarian Ray Meyer, are planning to attend the one day leadership program on April 17th in West Des Moines at the Church of Hope.
David Apollo, our Rotary Youth Exchange student, will also be attending the leadership program.
RYLA which stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards brings groups of outstanding young men and women together in an informal atmosphere for a challenging program of leadership training, discussions, inspirational addresses and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship.

This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is about Group Study Exchange (GSE)
A GSE team from Holland spent four weeks in California. During their time in California, the Dutch GSE team raised $2,913 for the Inca Educa charity based in Cusco, Peru to build a school library for underprivileged young adults. The team, led by retired firefighter, Bob Boersma, was composed of people from diverse professions: working in public service, administrative law, public broadcasting and financial services. The team participated in vocational and cultural days and returned home, having made new friends and business contacts, ready to share new ideas with their Dutch countrymen. Sponsoring a GSE team is a great way to create Service through Acquaintance.
Contributions to our Foundation are the oil that makes the Rotary Wheel of service turn.

Future Vision Plan
The Foundation Trustees identified a growing need to focus efforts in order to achieve greater impact, more public recognition, and streamlined operations for improved efficiency. The new grant structure will enable Rotarian's to change people's lives, make the world a better place, and help meet the priorities and goals of Rotary's Strategic plan.
A three-year pilot began in July 2010, with 100 Rotary districts testing the plan. All districts will transition to the new model in July 2013.
Under Future Vision, the Foundation offers two types of grants. District grants are block grants that enable clubs and districts to address immediate needs in their communities and abroad. Global grants offer opportunities to participate in strategically focused, high-impact activities within the six areas of focus. Global grants range from $30,000 to $400,000.
The six areas of focus are:
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
Disease prevention and treatment
Water and sanitation
Maternal and child health
Basic education and literacy
Economic and community development
