Mike Deatz "Autistic License", Program March 16th

Mike Deatz, Director of the Chariton High School play "Autistic License" will be presented at Johnson Auditorium this Thursday and Friday night, March 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m.

"Autistic License" is the autobiographical account of a family's journey to raise a child with autism. From the time that her child is diagnosed at age three, "Mom" leads us through the challenges and milestones of living with autism. An omnipresent interviewer acts not so much as a guide, but rather a sounding board, as she moves along this uncharted path. We learn from her experiences, the impact this disability has on her marriage, and family, while witnessing first hand the best and the worst of people who encounter her child in the outside world.

As a result of living with disability, not only does she come to a greater understanding and appreciation of the uniqueness of her child; but also gains greater depth as a woman and a mother.

Mike Mamminga, Program March 23rd

Mike Mamminga is a Consultant for Iowa State University Meat Department. Mike is from Des Moines and started as a meat inspector and became the first non-veterinarian bureau chief of the Iowa Meat and Poultry Inspection Bureau. He is widely recognized for his knowledge of food safety.

Parents and Children First Luncheon, March 15th

The Lucas County Child Abuse Prevention Council (Parents and Children First) is preparing for their annual theme basket fundraiser. The fundraiser is used for matching grants received from Prevent Child Abuse Iowa.

On March 15th, a luncheon from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. will be held at Carpenter's Hall for the public. Please plan to attend and support this very worthy cause.

RYLA, April 17, 2012

Sophomores Emma Fuhs, daughter of Rotarian Veronica Fuhs and Paul Opheim, the son of Rotarian Ray Meyer, are planning to attend the one day leadership program on April 17th in West Des Moines at the Church of Hope.
David Apollo, our Rotary Youth Exchange student, will also be attending the leadership program.

RYLA which stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards brings groups of outstanding young men and women together in an informal atmosphere for a challenging program of leadership training, discussions, inspirational addresses and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship.

This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is about becoming a Paul Harris Fellow or what a $1000 dollar contribution can do.

A US contribution of $1000 helps provide seven toilets in Sri Lanka. More than 2.6 billion people still lack access to proper sanitation. Most people in the developed world do not think about their sanitation system unless it is not working properly, but in Sri Lanka many people lack access to proper sanitation facilities. The Rotary club of Ja-Ela Kandana, Sri Lanka partnering with the Rotary club of Madras Northwest, India took the matter into their own hands and obtained a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant to provide sanitation to a small community comprising of 15 families. They built 14 toilets providing the families with proper sanitation. This will insure a reduction in illness and increase the health and wellness of this community. Rotarians meet the needs of the world by working through The Rotary Foundation.

It's the official District Training session when planning and preparations occur for the new Rotary year with new Rotary leaders from across the District. Dress is business casual. Future Vision Plan

The Foundation Trustees identified a growing need to focus efforts in order to achieve greater impact, more public recognition, and streamlined operations for improved efficiency. The new grant structure will enable Rotarian's to change people's lives, make the world a better place, and help meet the priorities and goals of Rotary's Strategic plan.

A three-year pilot began in July 2010, with 100 Rotary districts testing the plan. All districts will transition to the new model in July 2013.

Under Future Vision, the Foundation offers two types of grants. District grants are block grants that enable clubs and districts to address immediate needs in their communities and abroad. Global grants offer opportunities to participate in strategically focused, high-impact activities within the six areas of focus. Global grants range from $30,000 to $400,000.

The six areas of focus are:
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
Disease prevention and treatment
Water and sanitation
Maternal and child health
Basic education and literacy
Economic and community development
