Mallory Castle, Program April 27th

One of Chariton;s most outstanding residences was located in the northwest part of Chariton. It belonged to a family named Mallory and was built in 1879.

Locally known as 'Mallory Castle' it was named Ilion after the town in New York where the family originally lived. One of the streets near the property in Chariton bears the name Ilion Avenue.

Mr. Mallory was a legendary character. Railroading was an early part of his life and seemed to be profitable for him. Later he was in real estate and banking. Most of his life, and success, revolved around the railroad. He sold vegetables and fruits from his gardens to the Burlington Railroad. The dining cars were supplied ice from his ice house.

Ilion was built in the most modern design, style, and architecture of the day. In all respects it surpassed the ordinary and was the ultimate of culture, beauty, state and refinement. Not only the house was built of the best materials available but the furnishings and surroundings were also the finest. Truly a 'castle'. The exterior was of bricks from Mr. Mallory's brick yard. The floors were inlaid hardwoods; many rooms had fireplaces and paneling. A large porch was added in 1894 for the 'porch parties' so popular in the '90's.

The family traveled extensively but when at home they entertained with style. Private railroad cars were often on the Chariton sidings while their occupants were dining or being entertained at Ilion. Railroad officials and the like were frequent guests. Mrs. Mallory liked music and many concerts were held at the house. There were also many fine instruments in the home.

The 940 acres around the home enhanced the palatial residence. It's gardens, orchards and green houses were well known. At one time there were about six thousand fruit trees. At one time Mallory Castle had its' own golf course and a lake. Many people were hired to keep the place in order; cooks, maids, housekeepers, gardeners, horsemen, stablemen and coachmen.

The estate was sold in 1949 to C. O. Brown for $30 per acre from Eikenberry and Busselle who had acquired it in 1907. The once beautiful old home was torn down in 1955 and many nice homes were built on the castle grounds. Unofficially it is referred to as Ilion Acres.

David Apolo at District 6000 Conference

David Apolo, our Rotary Youth Exchange student from Ecuador is shown carrying the flag of his country during the flag ceremony at the 2012 District 6000 Conference on Friday, April 13th.

The Educational, Humanitarian and PolioPlus Programs are the monuments of the Foundation and Rotarians should be proud to yell it from the roof tops. We will eradicate polio, hunger and poverty.
