John D. Lawrence, Program May 11th

John Lawrence is the Associate Dean, Extension Programs and Outreach in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Director Agriculture & Natural Resources Extension at Iowa State University. In this position he leads the extension and outreach programs to farmers, agribusiness and natural resource managers in the state of Iowa. Previously, John was the Extension Livestock Economist and Professor in the Department of Economics and Director of the Iowa Beef Center. John is a graduate of Iowa State University and the University of Missouri.

Board Meeting Friday May 11th

The Rotary Board will meet at Carpenter's Hall at 11:00 a.m. on this coming Friday, May 11th. This is a great way to make up a missed meeting and to learn more about Rotary.

This week's Rotary Foundation Thought is About Micro Credit.

In Cuzco, Peru Rotarians contributed $10,000 to a partnering association, Asociacion MIDE, which provided small loans to 288 low-income women. In six months these women improved their businesses and living standards, lifting them out of extreme poverty. While local Rotarians had the opportunity to work together to develop the project and approve the system of loans, the participants learned to use, administer and benefit from financial credit. In the process, the women improved their self-esteem as they acquired entirely new roles of financial responsibility for their families. How do I focus my giving? Every Rotarian, Every Year - Giving is hope in action. Thank you for your support.

Future Vision Plan

The Foundation Trustees identified a growing need to focus efforts in order to achieve greater impact, more public recognition, and streamlined operations for improved efficiency. The new grant structure will enable Rotarian's to change people's lives, make the world a better place, and help meet the priorities and goals of Rotary's Strategic plan.

A three-year pilot began in July 2010, with 100 Rotary districts testing the plan. All districts will transition to the new model in July 2013.

Under Future Vision, the Foundation offers two types of grants. District grants are block grants that enable clubs and districts to address immediate needs in their communities and abroad. Global grants offer opportunities to participate in strategically focused, high-impact activities within the six areas of focus. Global grants range from $30,000 to $400,000.

The six areas of focus are:
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
Disease prevention and treatment
Water and sanitation
Maternal and child health
Basic education and literacy
Economic and community development
