Susan Seuferer and several Chariton High School students will present about a new program at the high school called VREP (Virtual Reality Education Pathfinders).  VREP is a self-directed class, giving students the freedom to decide what areas interest them and what technologies to use.  Working with peers within their own school and across the VREP consortia, students complete projects, research and design their own virtual programs, and create 3D projects that are then utilized as immersive virtual environments.   Students and other viewers can then interact with the virtual environments, providing a learning environment that engages today's learners.

The following Rotarians helped with Roadside Clean Up last Saturday:
Corey Goodenow
Sandra Knebel
Mike Miller
Corliss  & Jeanne Klaassen

There were 6 boy scouts and 2 leaders that helped as well.   It was great to have the extra help as there was lots of trash.  It took about 2 hours.

The Rotary Board meets this coming Friday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at Carpenter's Hall.  This is an easy way to make up a missed meeting and to learn more about Rotary.

Rotary International was recently recognized in a Chicago Sun-Times feature about the key role social media is playing in Rotary's campaign to eradicate polio through the new website endpolionow.org.  The site lets users see where donations to the campaign are directed, track the decline of polio, and estimate the value of their tweets or Facebook likes to the eradication effort, based on the number of followers or friends they have.  Check out the endpolionow.org website.

The primary school outside Maputo, Mozambique, lacked money to update its crumbling sanitation system built decades earlier, when the school served 700 students.  It now serves 2,500 students and staff.

The plumbing was so deteriorated that school officials were forced to close the bathrooms and set up makeshift stalls in a neighboring open area - one side for girls, the other for boys.

Not only were the bathrooms in disrepair, but the school lacked running water.  There were two taps on the playground that ran for only two hours a day.

The Maputo Rotarians obtained several price estimates to upgrade the sanitation system and install a water tank and began looking for an international partner to finance the US$55,100 project.

The Rotary Club of Skanderborg, Denmark was a club in the test district for the new global grant setup and was looking for a Foundation project as they had funds to use.

Once the clubs connected, they applied for and received a Rotary Foundation Global Grant.  It took two months to complete the bathrooms, dig a water hole, and install a 5,000 liter tank.

School officials are now charged with maintaining the sanitation system and water tank, which came with a one-year guarantee and were built to require little maintenance.  The Rotarians involved were also careful to make sure the contractor agreed to provide regular maintenance of the sanitation system and tank.

The children are very happy.
