Before Doug Flournoy joined Rotary he earned his Ph. D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1988.  After working for the USDA as a research chemist for 5 years he entered the teaching profession and is currently a Professor of Chemistry at Indian Hills Community College.  Doug enjoys teaching chemistry and some mathematics but views these courses as vehicles to teach clear and critical thinking and communication skills.

Doug joined the Rotary Club of Fairfield in 2002 and served as its President in Rotary's Centennial year, 2004-05, under DG Bill Tubbs.  That year he was instrumental in starting the Interact Club in Fairfield and executed the club's first International Matching Grant with the Rotary Club of Cankaya in Turkey. Since that time he has been the lead Project Contact on seven additional matching grants with clubs in South Africa and Columbia.  Doug is also the Rotary Club of Fairfield;s District Simplified Grants writer and they have successfully applied for a DSG each year since 2005.  He has chaired the D6000 District Simplified Grants Committee since 2009 and because of his heavy involvement in The Rotary Foundation grant writing, he currently sits on the D6000 Future Visions Committee and on the D6000 International Grants Committee.

Doug will give us an update on the Competitive Matching Grant with the Rotary Club of Narayani Mid Town, Nepal.  The purpose of the grant is to provide clean drinking water for a village of 10,000 people in Jaluke, Nepal.

The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on immunization (SAGE) met last week in Geneva, Switzerland.  During the meeting, the draft polio eradication and end game strategy for 2013-2018 and current status of the global  polio eradication program were presented to SAGE.  Substantial progress has been made in implementing polio emergency action plans in the remaining polio-infected countries, detailed attention to oral polio vaccine (OPV) campaign planning in the field, and new evidence in improving performance.  SAGE was alarmed, however, by the considerable funding shortfalls at a time when eradication is in sight.

Total Wild Poliovirus (WPV) cases - Year-to-date 2012 = 187 (2011 = 520)

Pakistan = 54
Afghanistan = 27
Nigeria = 101
Chad = 5
