The year was 1913,one hundred years ago, when an unknown Rotarian in Syracuse, New
York, USA suggested that a Committee be formed to help Crippled Children who were
victims of Polio. The idea became popular and soon other nearby clubs, in Canada
and the USA formed their own Committees for Crippled Children. These clubs banded
together to form the International Society for Crippled Children. Wanting a prominent
person as its first Chairman, they chose Rotary's own Paul Harris. It was only 8
years after the first Rotary meeting.
That same Rotary committee eventually morphed to become the Easter Seal Society,
which ran the March of Dimes and was the principal fundraiser to fight polio for
several decades. A long time ago, my elementary school classmates and I would put
a dime (ten cents) into little March of Dimes folders every school day. A dime was
enough to buy a candy bar and a Coke in those days.
Rotary has been a major player against Polio for a long time. In 1929, the first
significant grant ($500) from The Rotary Foundation was made to the International
Society for Crippled Children. I like to think that it all began with an idea from
somebody in a Rotary Club, a white hat guy indeed.
