And as we begin this month long celebration of literacy, I've seen how Rotarians have helped empower communities with simple, creative, and sustainable ways to break the cycle of poor education.  Literacy plays a critical role in healthy and productive lives, and whether it was by volunteering at a local school, bringing language training to adults and children through concentrated language encounter and computer-assisted literacy systems, or ensuring that all children have the textbooks they need, Rotarians have helped thousands.  Wilfred J. Wilkinson  Foundation Trustee Chair

The Rotary Club of Chariton started the Literacy program about 12 years ago.  Rotarians started reading to the first grade class at Columbus about 9 years ago, then changed to the kindergarten class about 3 years ago.

Rotarians in Canada, the Canadian International Development Agency, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have raised approximately C$6 million for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative through Pennies and More for Polio.

"Canadian Rotarians are encouraged by the support from the Canadian Government over many years and in particular with the recent effort to raise the matching funds well beyond the target of one million dollars," said Dr. Robert Scott, chair of Rotary's International PolioPlus Committee.  "The eradication of polio, with this and future cooperation, will more quickly become a reality."

"This innovative program is another example of Canada's and Rotarians' long-time commitment and leadership to ensuring children are forever protected from this debilitating yet preventable disease," said Chris Elias, president of the Global Development Program at the Gates Foundation.
