Loring Miller was the owner of Miller Insurance in Leon until his recent retirement. He was selected by the District Nominating Committee as District Governor for the Rotary year 2015-2016.
A Rotarian since 1976 and the third generation of his family to belong to Rotary, Loring is well known to us all as a longtime Rotary Youth Exchange chairperson. It was Loring who coordinated the Youth Exchange for the Simon Estes South African Youth Chorus in 1998-99, which led to the district named the Most Outstanding Youth Exchange District in USA/Canada in 2000.
Along with his wife Phyllis, who is also a Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Decatur County, Loring has served as Assistant Governor. His service to our district is notable. In 2012 he received the District Governor's Award. However, Loring has also been active on the international scene, having immunized children against polio in both India and Africa, built schools in Mexico and an orphanage in China, and introduced technology to a medical facility in an Amazonian village.
Loring's major focus has always been Youth Exchange. International presidents have called on him to serve on the Rotary International Youth Exchange Committee and to coordinate youth activities at international conventions. In 2002, Loring was president of USA/Canada Youth Exchange Network. He has instituted Youth Exchange programs in districts worldwide. In addition, he has hosted five Rotary exchange students in his home.
Loring's presentation will be about the new RYLA program in District 6000.

The Rotary Board will meet this coming Friday, April 5th at Carpenter's Hall at 11 a.m. The board is meeting April 5th instead of April 12th since the District Conference is on the 12th.
This is an easy way to make up a missed meeting and to learn more about Rotary.

This month we celebrate National Volunteer Week, the International Day of Mine Awareness, World Health Day, and Earth Day, and each of these recognitions ties in with one of our six areas of focus. This tells me that every Rotary club member has a part to play as an effective volunteer in these important observances.
Furthermore, we owe it to our community and the world to tell our story, to make the world aware of our efforts. One way to achieve this is by supporting your Rotary regional magazine, particularly in April, which is also Magazine Month.
So how does all this relate to our Rotary Foundation? Well, very few initiatives don't require funding. Your Foundation is often able to help, whether it's with a district grant or a much larger global grant. Your contributions to the Foundation provide a potential source of funding that can help a club's members do good in the world.
Wildred J. Wilkinson Foundation Trustee Chair
Last year the Rotary Club of Chariton was a 100% Sustaining Member Club which means that every member in our club gave $100 to The Rotary Foundation.

Click here to read The Adventures of Cammeo
Cammeo Medici is a Chariton native and a graduate of Chariton High School. Our club sponsored her as an Outbound Youth Exchange student to Italy in 2003-04.
Cammeo has incredible gratitude for the Youth Exchange opportunity and experience that she says truly defined the path she has taken since then, in regards to choosing to study International Relations at Drake, study abroad in South Africa, work for Iowa Council for International Understanding, serve as a volunteer in mission in Peru and Bolivia, pursue her Master's in Public Health, and apply for the 2012-13 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship which she received. She is currently in Begota, Columbia studying towards her Master's in Public Health at the University of Columbia.
Cammeo said she had aspirations and goals for her life that she had never dreamed of prior to the year of her Youth Exchange in Italy. Her gratitude to Rotary is what has motivated her to stay so closely connected to this organization.
