Ken Harrison, Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Chariton's school system, took a non-traditional route into education, not entering the classroom until he was 30 years old.  He graduated from NWMSU with a degree in psychology and moved to Montana where he built homes and served on two search and rescue teams.  While he enjoyed carpentry, the long winter encouraged him to find a career that was less dependent upon the weather.  So the following fall he enrolled in the education program at Montana State University; two years later he was student teaching and coaching football at Clarke.  After student teaching he was offered a job teaching Chemistry, Physics and several other science classes at Murray.  While at Murray he accepted a job in Arizona.  After a one year stint as the 8th grade science teacher Ken and his wife came back to Iowa.  Upon returning to Iowa both were hired at Twin Cedars when Ken started his MA program.  After receiving an MA in Educational Leadership he accepted the 6-12 principal position at Villisca.  From there he moved to Mount Ayr as the 7-12 principal and remained in Mount Ayr until accepting the Director of Curriculum and Instruction position at Chariton CSD.  Ken recently completed his ED.S. from the University of South Dakota.

Volunteers are needed for the County Wide Cleanup Day May 1st.  Pickups are also needed.  Drivers will meet between 8:00-8:15 a.m. at Johnson's Auditorium to gather students and set out on their routes. We will be doing the Rotary roadside cleanup that day as well and packing the Backpack Buddies sacks at 5 p.m. at the Hy-Vee warehouse.

Lunch is at 1 p.m. in front of the armory.

Contact Kris Patrick at Charitonchamber@iowatelecom.net if you can help.

On April 12, 2013 more than 400 scientists, doctors and technical experts from 75 countries launched the Scientific Declaration on Polio Eradication. The declaration’s launch coincides with the 58th anniversary of the announcement of Jonas Salk’s revolutionary polio vaccine.

The world is closer than ever to eradicating polio, with just 223 cases in five countries last year. To capitalize on this time-limited opportunity to end the disease, a wide range of experts have signed the declaration to emphasize the achievability of polio eradication and endorse the Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan, a new strategy by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to reach the end of polio by 2018. The scientists and experts signing the declaration include Nobel laureates, vaccine and infectious disease experts, public health school deans, pediatricians and other health authorities. For additional information about the Scientific Declaration or to view a full list of signatories, please visit the Emory Vaccine Center Website.
