Stephanie Filer is the Manager of Special Gifts & Partnerships for the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL).

A native of Cedar Rapids, she joined the ARL 3 years ago to lead the organization's fundraising and marketing team.  Prior to her relocation to Des Moines, Stephanie was the Marketing Director for the children's non-profit, Junior Achievement.  She also served as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the humane society in Linn County.

Stephanie has presented nationally on issues surrounding breed discriminatory legislation and in recent months has led the efforts to create breed-neutral communities in Perry and Newton, with the current focus on Des Moines.

She lives near Pleasant Hill with her four BIG dogs - including the ARL's "spokesdog," a pit bull named "Freedom" - and three cats.

Stephanie's presentation will focus on municipal regulation of pit bulls.

District 6000 will combine with District 5970 to hold this six-day/5-night leadership camp from July 7-12 at Wartburg College designed for Sophomore or Junior High School students.  The cost per student is $400 and we will sponsor Allison Mark and Zach Fisher.

A case of type 1 polio has been reported in the Banadir region of Somalia. The country’s first case since March 2007, genetic sequencing suggests that the virus is closely related to a type 1 virus strain circulating in Nigeria.

In response to the outbreak, an immunization campaign is scheduled to take place 14-16 May, aimed at reaching more than 350,000 children in the Banadir region.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a surveillance alert for Somalia and bordering areas of northern Kenya and eastern Ethiopia, highlighting the need for urgent searches for additional cases of acute flaccid paralysis and suspected polio in all health facilities. WHO has also advised all countries in Africa and the eastern Mediterranean region to heighten their surveillance for poliovirus.

While only three countries remain polio-endemic -- Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan -- the world is at risk of outbreaks until all three stop the virus. Continued support for polio eradication is needed to ensure that the progress gained is not lost.
