Jonathan, Dusty, and Leah, Program July 20th

The students, Jonathan Wilson, Dusty Hardin and Leah Dow (all seniors this fall at CHS) participated this summer in Boys' State and Girls' State Leadership camps.  The Chariton American Legion (Boys' State) and American Legion Auxiliary (Girls' State) paid all camp fees for the students to attend and represent Chariton.  This camp was a combination of leadership and government training held at Iowa State University for 1 week in June.

Iowa American Legion Hawkeye Girls & Boys State is a week-long "Hands-On" experience in the operation of the democratic form of government.  Through the Girls/Boys State objective of "learning by doing", young women/men will learn more about city, county and state government in one week than they would in an entire semester of high school.

Girls/Boys State is an exercise in leading as well as following others. Elections are an opportunity to show the ability to perform under pressure and to show character in the face of victories and/or defeats.  Girls/Boys State will test skill in solving problems and working effectively within a team.
Relay for Life Rotary Team

Rotary International News

Polio eradication shifts into emergency mode.  Despite the dramatic drop in polio cases in the last year, the threat of continued transmission due to funding and immunization gaps has driven the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to launch the Global Polio Emergency Action Plan 2012-13.
The plan aims to boost vaccination coverage in the three remaining polio-endemic countries - Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan - to levels needed to stop polio transmission.
Polio outbreaks in China and West Africa due to importation from Pakistan and Nigeria, respectively have highlighted the continued threat of resurgence.  Failure to eradicate the disease could lead within a decade to paralysis of as many as 200,000 children per year worldwide.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think say or do

first

Is it the TRUTH?
second

Is it FAIR to all concerned?
third
Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
fourth

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
