Neal Sokol, D.O. FACOS, FICS, has been providing surgical practice as a general surgeon in Chariton for over the past 13 years.  His training is extensive and exceeds that of many surgeons who practice in larger communities.  Dr. Sokol received his undergraduate degree at Iowa State University and completed his medical training at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.  He is a Fellow with the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.  He is Board Certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.  Rather than using his considerable skill and talent to serve a more urban population, Dr. Sokol deliberately sought a rural location for his practice.

Dr. Sokol arrived in Chariton to practice with Lucas County Health Center (LCHC) in July 1999.  He practiced at the Health Center for two years before opening Surgical Clinic of Southern Iowa, PC, located at 1812 Court Ave. in Chariton.  Dr. Sokol provides a full spectrum of surgical services at LCHC, including removal of tumors, abdominal surgeries, colonoscopies, and much more.  Dr. Sokol also offers Botox injections and spider vein procedures.

Come and bring your family and enjoy an evening of fellowship at the Soda Pop Saloon on Sat. Aug. 25 at 6:00 p.m.
There is no charge but we ask that you please bring a side dish such as a vegetable, salad, or dessert.
The meat is furnished by the club which will be pulled pork sandwiches. Veronica Fuhs graciously offered to cook the meat for us.  Drinks & table service will also be furnished by the club.

We need to get a count on how many are planning to attend so please sign up at Rotary on Friday or contact Corliss at corlissk@mediacombb.net.

The August 3 issue of Science magazine features two articles on polio eradication - "The Polio Emergency" and "Fighting Polio in Pakistan" - and includes several references to Rotary's role.

"Fighting Polio in Pakistan" describes how Rotary conducted an immunization survey of 7,000 children in an area of Karachi, found that four had been missed, then ensured they were vaccinated.  Rotary also joined with UNICEF and Coca-Cola Beverages Pakistan to conduct a massive cleanup of the area, hauling away about 160 tons of garbage. Rotary is trying to "give the message that we are there not just for polio but for everything else," says Aziz Memon, chair of Pakistan's National PolioPlus Committee.

Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria are the only remaining polio-endemic countries in the world  The incidence of polio in Pakistan has dropped by more than 60 percent this year, with 23 cases reported as of July 12, compared with 59 cases during the same period last year.
