Danica Harris graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelors of Science in Child and Family Studies in May 2000.  Danica went on to begin her career as an Investigator for the Missouri Children's Dvision, formally known as DFS.  During this time Danica covered a five county area in the Northwest region of Missouri including the counties of Atchison, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway and Worth. 

When Danica's husband, Chris was hired by Cerner Corporation in Kansas City, MO, Danica relocated to Kansas City and continued on as an Investigator with the Children's Division for the Out of Home Investigation Unit.  In 2002, Danica began working on her Masters in Social Work at the University of Missouri - Kansas City.  After beginning work on her MSW, Danica moved into the area of providing mental health services at Gillis, a Residential and Day Treatment facility for boys ages five to eighteen.  Danica remained at Gillis for eight years where she served as the Residential Admissions Coordinator for five years and then the Day Treatment Clinical Services Supervisor for three years.  Danica obtained clinical licensure in 2006 through the state of Missouri. 

In 2010 Danica began working at Children's Mercy Hospital as a clinician in the Emergency Department.  In addition to Danica's daily responsibilities at Children's Mercy, Danica provides field instruction to students who are currently working on their Masters in Social Work.  Danica has been a field instructor since 2006 and has worked with students from Kansas University, University of Missouri (Mizzou), University of Missouri-Kansas City and Washburn.  Danica also provides education to community organizations on topics such as Trauma Informed Care, Vicarious Trauma and Child Abuse and Neglect. In 2012 Danica was one of two Keynote speakers at the Children's Mercy Emergency Pediatric Conference. 

Danica and Chris have two beautiful children, Kaisa (7) and Thorstan (5).  Danica currently resides in Gladstone, Missouri and is the daughter of Dan and Deb Kent.

The Rotary board will meet at 11:00 a.m. on October 11 at Carpenter's Hall. 

This is a great way to make up a missed meeting and to learn more about Rotary.

How can you use your vocational skills to help students prepare for life after graduation? Three years ago, the Rotary Club of Rappahannock-Fredericksburg, Virginia set out to answer that question with the help of Germanna Community College, the Spotsylvania Education Foundation, and their local high school. Here’s what they discovered.

Under their Rotary club’s leadership, the group created the Pathfinders program, a project that offered field trips, in-school presentations and mentoring to students who needed a boost to achieve their full potential.

While the program’s emphasis is on helping young people prepare for productive and satisfying careers, it also seeks to broaden their horizons. Growing up in rural Virginia, many students had never ventured far from their home county. So Pathfinder field trips include not only tours of workplaces and colleges, but also experiences visiting museums and attending professional theatrical productions.

In-school presentations feature Rotarians discussing their occupations, as well as programs on choosing a college and applying for financial aid. The key to the program’s success is mentoring. Almost 20 members of their club work with students individually to give them in-depth knowledge of particular careers and encourage them to take the steps necessary to succeed.

This year they have expanded the Pathfinders effort by partnering with the College’s Career Coaching program. This will allow them to help a larger number of students by supplementing the work the career coach does with virtually every one of the school’s seniors.

While the focus of Pathfinders is helping students prepare for the future, participating Rotary members also derive great satisfaction from seeing the impact they have on individual students’ lives. In the future, they hope to work with other Rotary clubs to adopt schools of their own.

Cammeo Medici is a Chariton native and a graduate of Chariton High School.  Our club sponsored her as an Outbound Youth Exchange student to Italy in 2003-04.

Cammeo received the 2012-13 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship and is in Bogota Columbia studying towards her Master's in Public Health at the University of Columbia.
