The AER Fishing
Report: Marek Lands a King and Todd Reels in a King AND a Sockeye!
by Slinker, Amy
Marek experienced the excitement of reeling in a 23 lb.,
37-inch King Salmon at Ship Creek on Wednesday! He caught it on the
incoming high tide with cured salmon eggs as bait with a spin-n-glo
set-up.
Marek grew up fishing with his father. He was proud to make
a video call on Skype afterwards to show his dad a photo of the biggest
fish he has ever caught! Marek had the pleasure of enjoying the salmon
for dinner last week with his host family.
Marek’s fishing excursions last week included Eetu Salmiola
of Finland and Karl Berglund from Sweden, both exchange students through
the Anchorage South Rotary club. AER member Allen Clark brought Heather
Flynn’s nephew, Todd. A big thank you to Dustin Slinker for organizing
these adventures, outfitting the group, offering fishing instruction and
providing transportation for the students to the Russian River.
Todd, who is 17, caught the first fish of the week: a
sockeye salmon on the group’s trip to the Russian River Monday. He also
caught and released a King Salmon later in the week at Ship Creek! He is
an experienced angler and his first trip to Alaska was perfect timing to
join in on the fun.

Last Message
from President Jeff
by Blake, Jeff
Thank you! Thank you! That is really all that I have to say
now that the Rotary year2012-2013 is coming into the waning hours. I
thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of being at the helm of this wonderful
club. Because of you the members my year has been easy because you all
did the work and proved to me that Rotarians don’t’ say no when asked to
help and most times you don’t have to be asked because you are already
helping. This is the best club in Rotary, the most sociable, the
best helpers and those that believe in their community and service above
self. It has been a wonderful year for me and I am looking forward
to more years with Rotary and this family of Rotary. Once again thank
you!!

RI Convention in Lisbon
by Jackson,
Linda
Anchorage East is Having Fun! Making Friends! learning
to do even more good!
The 104th Rotary
International Convention is currently being held in sunny Lisbon,
Portugal. The scenery is beautiful, the people friendly, and the
Fado music divine.
Bruce Phelps and Jay
Jackson attended the 1-day World Water Summit V presented by WASRAG—Water
and Sanitation Rotary Action Group—Friday in Lisbon. Both learned a
lot, and Bruce is quite energized and enthusiastic about international
projects for AER. Sandra Wicks joined them for the WASRAG reception
on Sat. evening. Bruce and Sandra are pictured with District 5010
First Dude Mike Pollen.
Everyone was presented
with a flower when they entered the House of Friendship following its
Grand Opening. Pictured with theirs are Shirley Nelson and Sandra
Wicks.
The Opening Ceremonies
were quite inspirational. You could not beat the
entertainment. The Ceremony closed with a concert by Il Divo—what
voices! An appropriate international act for an international
convention, the four male singers are from the United States,
Switzerland, France, and Spain.
Sunday night District
5010 and AER were well represented at a Rotary Zone Dinner.
The ribs were to die for—as were the waiters. A number of ladies in
attendance decided Portugal has beautiful people. (Pictures
later…or maybe what happens in Portugal stays in Portugal!)
Pictured are Tam Agosti-Gisler, and Sue and Harold Foley.

DONATIONS
NEEDED:
BIKES: It is that time of year… when a bike means
freedom! We are particularly interested in adult bikes as they can
mean the difference between accepting a job or having to turn it down due
to the limited bus route hours. The bike needs to be in working
condition, we don’t have the person power to repair bikes.
PILLOWS: We are in need of pillows – they must be new,
we cannot give out used pillows. Fred Meyers is having good deals
on them lately and Walmart generally has them for very little as
well. As usual I have copied the longer donations list here
below and also attached it to this email. We look forward to seeing
you at the park this summer and in our work welcoming
refugees.

New Member Proposed - Phillip Izon II
by Drew,
Michelle
Phillip
Izon II
Small
business Relationship Manager
Key
Bank N.A.
“Age is no impediment”
that is what one of my bosses said to me one day and I live by that
everyday. My name is Phillip Izon, the best way to describe myself is
driven, I drive to excel and prosper at every stage of my life, even
though life is short, we have a moral obligation to leave the world
better than we came into it. I follow this by helping everyone I can
understand my business and how they can navigate complicated financial
issues. I also volunteer on a regular basis, from my own programs with the
University of Alaska Anchorage teaching credit and other basic financial
education to college students, to partnering with the NAACP teaching
financial literacy, to being a team leader at Habitat for Humanity, to
something simple like pulling over to help someone in need.
I am very passionate
about my career and my long-term goals. I am currently a senior at
the University of Alaska Anchorage, and throughout my time in college I
realized that employers want work experience partnered with education, so
I started working at Wells Fargo and I let my drive take hold, I was
originally a pre med student; however, the relationships that I was able
to build with my clients pulled me into the financial industry as not
only a job, but a career. I enjoy banking and being able to build
relationships on trust and honesty, but above all I appreciate ethics, I
view ethics as not what is legal, but rather a level above the law. I
strive to be ethical, honest, and trustworthy in every aspect of my life.
I strive for great things and these great things come with hard work, I
believe that the harder I work the more successful the people around me
and I will be. I use these principles to guide my decision making and
behaviors everyday.
I would like to thank
Rowena Kehr for her support joining this great institution and at
introducing me to some great people in the community. This club has come
a long way since Paul Harris and the 3 other original members and I am
proud to say that I am apart of something so great. Thank you all for the
opportunity and I look forward to building life long relationships here.

Rotary
Foundation Thought
by Drew,
Michelle
Week of Jun 24- This
week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is
about: Service
Above Self
Plagued
by famine, the impoverished nation of Niger struggles to feed its
citizens. But Rotarians like Ernie and Sally Montagne, of Arizona, USA,
are helping to break this cycle of hunger and grinding poverty. During a
planning trip to Niger on a Volunteer Service Grant, the Montagnes saw
firsthand how The Rotary Foundation’s humanitarian efforts are supporting
sustainable projects there.
“The
Rotary Foundation is our vehicle of choice to enable ordinary Rotarians
to make a lasting difference in the lives of thousands of villagers in
Africa.”
Ernie and Sally Montagne

Solomon's
groaner of the week!
by Solomon,
Gregory
So I've shared at least ten different
puns with my fellow Rotary club members, with the hope that at
least one of the puns would make you laugh. Unfortunately, no pun in ten
did.

directly to your website.
OR, consider advertising on our in-meeting half-sheet

rarely left on the tables.
