      | Youth Exchange - Damine Fornas Graduates
      - Heads to Medical Schoolby Wicks, Sandra
 After making up the year
of high school he missed in France while he was on his exchange year with
us, Damien has completed the final two years of the French equivalent of
high school and passed the exit exams so he can now continue to the
      university.    Damien recently let me
know that he will be one of 3000 students in the first year of medical
school in Lyon, France, in the fall.  Only 450 of those students
(obviously, the best ones) will be allowed to continue into second year,
so wish Damien well with his studies in first year and hope that, in a
few years, when you are traveling in France and need a doctor, Damien
will be available.    Damien asked that I pass
on his greetings and thanks to the AER members and host families who were
so kind and generous and helpful to him when he was in Anchorage.

      | Youth Exchange - Marek is Home in Polandby Wicks, Sandra
 Marek made it safely home
to Poland, although he was quite reluctant to leave, and he reported that
he felt like he was in a dream at first when he got home.  He
was very happy to see his dog and, of course, his family.  He also
has an American exchange student sister at his house.      Marek thanks all the AER
members who were so generous with their time and money and mileage to
make his exchange year SO SPECIAL.

      | Youth Exchange - Last Post from Karen in
      Germanyby Kimberlin,
      Dawn
 June
was great. I came back from my internship and jumped right back into life
here in Neu-Anspach. I can't believe I'l be home next week. The time hast
gone by so fast, and I don't think I will believe it until I actually get
      home.     I'm
coming home a little earlier because there are a couple things I nedd to
do before school starts, like getting my drivers license, and I don't
want to havec to rush to do everything while dealing witht the fact that
I'm not in Germany anymore. I can imagine there will be some reverse
culture shock when I get home. It's going to be really hard for me to
      leave .     Last
week I did my presentation for Rotary on my year here, and I couldn't
believe it. I was up there, in from of my whole Rotary club and all of my
host families, and I was talking IN GERMAN about this amazing year that
I've had. I lived through it, and it's still hard to imagine.     I
have a few pictures... one is of me at the Berlin wall, one is of me with
my host family, and one is of me and my coworker during my internship.
(We made little ships and let snails ride around in them)  :)    Karen

      | Zegnaj Marek!by Slinker, Amy
It was hard for all of us to say farewell to Marek, but we
definitely had a lot of fun with him the last few days before he left.
The Kagerer family generously opened their home for Marek's Going Away
party; thank you to the Kagerers and to everyone who brought food to
      share!
Marek arrived to the party in style, thanks to Diane Louise
and Jerry Winchester! What a grand finale for Marek's time in Alaska and
with our club! Marek was extremely grateful to Diane and Jerry for this
amazing gesture. Thank you Diane and Jerry!
Wednesday night a group of Rotarians from Anchorage East and
the South club met at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport to
give Marek a nice sendoff as he boarded the plane back home. More thanks
to everyone who came out that night! Check out more photos of Marek's Farewell events from last
      week on Flickr: http://flickr.com/gp/29156212@N07/nn7eH1/     |
      | The AER Fishing Report: Marek and Alan
Land Kings and Todd Reels in a King AND a Sockeye! by Slinker, Amy

Marek experienced the excitement of reeling in a 23 lb.,
37-inch King Salmon at Ship Creek on Wednesday! He caught it on the
incoming high tide with cured salmon eggs as bait with a spin-n-glo
set-up. Marek grew up fishing with his father. He was proud to make
a video call on Skype afterwards to show his dad a photo of the biggest
fish he has ever caught! Marek had the pleasure of enjoying the salmon
for dinner last week with his host family. Marek’s fishing excursions last week included Eetu Salmiola
of Finland and Karl Berglund from Sweden, both exchange students through
the Anchorage South Rotary club. AER member Alan Clark brought Heather
Flynn’s nephew, Todd, visiting from Medford, Oregon. A big thank you to
Dustin Slinker for organizing these adventures, outfitting the group,
offering fishing instruction and providing transportation for the
students to the Russian River. Todd, who is 17, caught the first fish of the week: a
sockeye salmon on the group’s trip to the Russian River Monday. He also
caught and released a King Salmon Wednesday at Ship Creek! He is an
experienced angler and his first trip to Alaska was perfect timing to
join in on the fun. Check out more photos of the group’s adventures on Flickr: http://flickr.com/gp/29156212@N07/362W6X/ |

      | New Member Proposed - Phillip Izon IIby Drew,
      Michelle
 Phillip
      Izon II Small
      business Relationship Manager Key
Bank N.A. “Age is no impediment”
that is what one of my bosses said to me one day and I live by that
everyday. My name is Phillip Izon, the best way to describe myself is
driven, I drive to excel and prosper at every stage of my life, even
though life is short, we have a moral obligation to leave the world
better than we came into it. I follow this by helping everyone I can
understand my business and how they can navigate complicated financial
issues. I also volunteer on a regular basis, from my own programs with the
University of Alaska Anchorage teaching credit and other basic financial
education to college students, to partnering with the NAACP teaching
financial literacy, to being a team leader at Habitat for Humanity, to
something simple like pulling over to help someone in need. I am very passionate
about my career and my long-term goals. I am currently a senior at
the University of Alaska Anchorage, and throughout my time in college I
realized that employers want work experience partnered with education, so
I started working at Wells Fargo and I let my drive take hold, I was
originally a pre med student; however, the relationships that I was able
to build with my clients pulled me into the financial industry as not
only a job, but a career. I enjoy banking and being able to build
relationships on trust and honesty, but above all I appreciate ethics, I
view ethics as not what is legal, but rather a level above the law. I
strive to be ethical, honest, and trustworthy in every aspect of my life.
I strive for great things and these great things come with hard work, I
believe that the harder I work the more successful the people around me
and I will be. I use these principles to guide my decision making and
behaviors everyday. I would like to thank
Rowena Kehr for her support joining this great institution and at
introducing me to some great people in the community. This club has come
a long way since Paul Harris and the 3 other original members and I am
proud to say that I am apart of something so great. Thank you all for the
opportunity and I look forward to building life long relationships here. |

CLUBRUNNER is our website and newsletter program, but it is
not free.  In order to pay our annual dues we have to sell
advertisements.  Consider advertising your business on clubrunner
and in the Eastwind. Ads are only $50 for four weeks and the online ads link
directly to your website. OR, consider advertising on our in-meeting half-sheet
program - ads are $50 for four weeks there as well.  These items are
rarely left on the tables. Want to place an ad?  Contact Michelle Drew.   |
