President Sinclair announced the District Conference April 27, 28, 29 at Crowne Plaza, White Plains, NY for those interested.

Our speaker for the morning was Gus Hardart - International Service Director, who made a presentation on the Rotary Initiative for Population and Development (RIPD), an initiative for sustainable world population.  Rotary feels that it is a key area to address and any Rotarian can join.  There are currently 12,000 members and 55 chairmen leading the cause from different countries. The initiative was organized in 1996.

The population of the world is four times greater than it was 100 yrs ago. The impact of unsustainable growth is both environmental and social.

Environmental

·         The ice cap on Mt. Kilamanjaro has been melted by 92% due to global warming - a result of population growth and increased industrialization.

·         27,000 species of animal and plant life are lost each year.

Social

·         2.5 billion people live on less than $2.50/day - that's half the
world's population.

·         Half of mankind lives in conditions worse than 100 years ago.

There was a show of majority support from the club to press ahead with a project of this nature. The club will put money toward the project which will in turn be matched by the District and then RI.

Raffle Winner: Max Abend.
