President Sinclair was out ill, so the meeting was chaired by President-Elect Alan Pailing.

A questionnaire has been received from the Dept. of Health with reference to the recent outbreak of Gastroenteritis associated with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.  Anyone who was taken ill between September 25 and October 9 should complete the form.  Anyone who wants to fill in the questionnaire confidentially should email President Elect Alan and he will fax a copy of the form to them.

Club Secretary Vicki Abraham has circulated information on two new members.  Everyone is asked to please make sure you see them and get back to Vicki with any comments or objections as soon as possible.

George Cubbon reminded everyone of the Annual Auction to be held, Wednesday, November 15th at 7:00 p.m.  Any donations for the auction should not be more than $50.00 in value as this is the maximum bid.

As no real objections had been received, President Elect Alan told the members that the beneficiaries of the Children’s Fair will be the six schools, Big Brothers & Big Sisters and the Foster Parents Association.

Our speaker, Ms. Claudette Fleming was introduced by Mr. Doug Pullen.

Ms Fleming is the First Executive Director of Age Concern.  Age Concern has been in existence since 1978.  It was established as a result of the Government’s desire to have an advisory group on Senior’s issues.

Age Concern has now evolved into an incorporated body that employs an Executive Officer who along with its volunteers endeavors to provide seniors with Educational and Informational support.

A number of reports have been written on the issues related to seniors.  Ms Flemming has reviewed three of these reports written over a 21 year period and finds that the same five themes have consistently appeared in each report.  They are Housing; Income; Transportation; Support & Community Services; and Education & Information.

Age Concern plans are to promote:

·         Advocacy— Get the word out

·         Education — for the Seniors and General Public on seniors issues

·         Research — Specifically on long-term care insurance

·         Information — Produce a Consumers Guide to Nursing Homes so that people can make informed choices

·         Housing — Visiting nursing homes and looking at the care provided and the needs of the nursing homes.

·         The Shared Housing program under Janet Jackson.  This program allows seniors to live in their own home and share it with someone who has been selected by Ms. Jackson.

·         Partnerships with other organisations that serve seniors.

PP Charles Jeffers thanked Ms Flemming for her very informative talk.

The raffle was won by Hamilton Rotarian Joy Leman
