The First World War Battlefields of France.
http://www.anzacsinfrance.com/

Frank's interest in the topic arose about 25 years ago. We all new about Gallipoli and Simpson and his donkey from our school days but nothing was passed on about the Somme and the Western Front. After a lot of reading on the subject and three trips to the region over recent years Frank's presentation came together. He has presented to Rotary, Lions and Probus Clubs over the past few years and has a wealth on information on this topic. About myself, I worked in the building industry for 45 years. Firstly in structural steel as a draftsman then in Structural Engineering and Architecture as a design draftsman for about 20 years. I then progressed into building project management and construction and facilities management up to my retirement from the regular workforce 4 years ago. I now operate my own building design business on the Peninsula and was elected as a Councillor for the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council in 2008.

Visit by District Governor

Iven MacKay

Iven has lived and worked in Melbourne all his life, and was educated at Melbourne Grammar School. Iven's vocation in "Maps and Travel Guides" began with over 20 years in the family business publishing the "Melway Street Directory" finishing as Managing Director, these were great times. The family sold the business and Iven, along with Marilyn, a Home Ecomonics and Textiles teacher, decided to work together and purchased a specialty retail business "Map Land" Australia's oldest map shop, established in 1870, with shops in Melbourne CBD and in Kew.  Some years later, with the industry in decline, the Kew shop was sold and they concentrated on the City flagship store.  The growth of internet technology has had a hugh impact on the map and travel guide industry over the last 14 years, and in a final attempt to keep Map Land alive, the relocated themselves and the business to attempt to keep Map Land alive, they relocated themselves and the business to Bentleigh in 2008.  They closed the business in 2010 as it was simply not econimically viable to continue and will seek new opportunities form employment in the future.

Iven is a past president of the International Map Trade Association, Asia Pacific Region, and remains involved in the map & trade guide industry, attending confenences and map fairs worldwide.  He graduated from OCTU in 1977 as an Army Reserve Officer and served as such until joining Rotary.

Iven joined Rotary in 1985 and is a member of the Rotary Club of Toorak. He was a Club President in 1990-1991, District Governor's Representative 1991-1992, and has served as on District Committees and in District leadership roles ever since.  He has a 100% attendance record and is a strong believer in the benefits of weekly attendance.  Iven was GSE Team Leader to D3660 in Busan, South Korea in 2006.  He was assistant Governor for Beachside Cluster 2007-2009.  He is a Pual Harris Fellow with Double Sapphire.  Iven and Marilyn have a 23 year old son AShley. Interests include travek food & wine, and country/60's music

Last Weeks Speaker

Last  week we had several representatives from the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project accompanied by Br Robert Stone efc from the Edmund Rice Foundation (Australia) speak at our meeting.  Two Sisters  spoke about and discussed the Club Project they run to assist Asylum Seekers. They also had with them in attendance a current Asylum Seeker  in the program who  answered questions about what they are up against and why they wanted to live in another country. Robert Stone also spoke on more detail of the program, the length of time envolved, being able to find a job, which was most informative and interesting.  We would like to thank them all for taking time to attend our meeting and give a great presentation.

Thousands of motorcyclists, their families and friends will descend on Docklands on December 12 as the Motorcycle Riders Association (MRA) Toy Run comes to town.

The Docklands Chamber of Commerce has invited the Toy Run to Docklands this year to boost the local economy and forge greater ties with outer suburban Melbourne.

Chamber president Keith Rankin said as many as 30,000 people were expected to flock to Docklands on the day.  He said up to 10,000 motorbikes were expected, as well as friends and families.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 9800

"CONFERENCE SUPPORTERS" FOR DISTRICT 9800 CONFERENCE

ADELAIDE - MARCH 31 TO APRIL 2, 2011.

We are seeking the assistance of Rotary members, Rotary Clubs, Rotarians and non-Rotarians with businesses, who could contribute to the 2011 Conference with a supporters grant of $1000.00 to minimise the Conference costs. Individual support would also be welcome.

Companies, Clubs and individuals will have their names printed on a pop-up banner in the House of Friendship, displayed on the overhead screens, as well as being listed in the Conference Directory as "Conference Supporters", also included in the Conference satchels and listed in the Networker/website.

This is an ideal way of supporting the Conference and keeping the registration costs to a minimum, given the very difficult task of finding suitable sponsors.

Please place this request in your Club bulletins and promote at Club meetings as soon as possible, and do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

PLEASE MAKE CHEQUES PAYABLE TO THE ROTARY CLUB OF TOORAK CONFERENCE ACCOUNT, AND POST TO THE ADDRESS BELOW:-
