This Week Visit by District Governor Iven MacKay

This Week - Visit by District Governor - Iven MacKay

Iven has lived and worked in Melbourne all his life, and was educated at Melbourne Grammar School. Iven's vocation in "Maps and Travel Guides" began with over 20 years in the family business publishing the "Melway Street Directory" finishing as Managing Director, these were great times. The family sold the business and Iven, along with Marilyn, a Home Ecomonics and Textiles teacher, decided to work together and purchased a specialty retail business "Map Land" Australia's oldest map shop, established in 1870, with shops in Melbourne CBD and in Kew.  Some years later, with the industry in decline, the Kew shop was sold and they concentrated on the City flagship store.  The growth of internet technology has had a hugh impact on the map and travel guide industry over the last 14 years, and in a final attempt to keep Map Land alive, the relocated themselves and the business to attempt to keep Map Land alive, they relocated themselves and the business to Bentleigh in 2008.  They closed the business in 2010 as it was simply not econimically viable to continue and will seek new opportunities form employment in the future.

Iven is a past president of the International Map Trade Association, Asia Pacific Region, and remains involved in the map & trade guide industry, attending confenences and map fairs worldwide.  He graduated from OCTU in 1977 as an Army Reserve Officer and served as such until joining Rotary.

Iven joined Rotary in 1985 and is a member of the Rotary Club of Toorak. He was a Club President in 1990-1991, District Governor's Representative 1991-1992, and has served as on District Committees and in District leadership roles ever since.  He has a 100% attendance record and is a strong believer in the benefits of weekly attendance.  Iven was GSE Team Leader to D3660 in Busan, South Korea in 2006.  He was assistant Governor for Beachside Cluster 2007-2009.  He is a Pual Harris Fellow with Double Sapphire.  Iven and Marilyn have a 23 year old son AShley. Interests include travek food & wine, and country/60's music

Remembrance Day

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" - Remembrance Day

In Australia the 11th of November is a day to remember those who died in war.  The 11th of November 1918, saw the end of WW1. Australians observe one minute's silence at 11.00 am on Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day, was originally called Armistice Day.  After the end of WW2 in 1945, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day as an appropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead.

In 1993, to mark the 75th anniversary of the 1918 armistice, the Australian Government exhumed the remains of an unknown Australian soldier from the Western Front for entombment at the Australian War Memorial's Hall of Memory, Canberra. In 30 years from 1915, 100,000 Australians died in war service.  Many of those died in action.  Many also died through sickness and accidents.  Many Australians came home with severe war injuries and died not long after, or had a greatly shortened life.

Over 500 Australians died in the Vietnam War, and since WW2, Australians have also seen action in places like Korea, Indonesia, Malaya, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Coming Up

Dec 12th 2011. We have been asked to assist with a BBQ at Docklands for the MRA event.  1000's are expected to attend and we will need all the help we can get.  More information will be coming next week but if you can please keep this day free in your calendar to assist. Any queries please contact either Mike Perry or Kevin Mooney.

Thousands of motorcyclists, their families and friends will descend on Docklands on December 12 as the Motorcycle Riders Association (MRA) Toy Run comes to town.

The Docklands Chamber of Commerce has invited the Toy Run to Docklands this year to boost the local economy and forge greater ties with outer suburban Melbourne.

Chamber president Keith Rankin said as many as 30,000 people were expected to flock to Docklands on the day.  He said up to 10,000 motorbikes were expected, as well as friends and families.

What Paul Harris Said for November 2010

Albert Park Rotarian Ann White came across the following article which has some very interesting reading.

What Paul Harris Said for November 2010

A departure from our usual "quote."

"The New Orleans storm that nearly ended the life of Rotary's founder, 12 years before Rotary was formed." The story is stranger than fiction. Read it here.

This will give you something to talk about when you visit our booth, in New Orleans, next year.   Just tell the RGHF members at the booth that you know how Rotary almost died, when Paul was 25.
