| Last Weeks Speaker - Spohie Dowse
Sophie who is a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from USA spoke about her young years growing up with the family in Britian and then moving to the USA at age 7. How the family adapted to a new country, what they got involved with and her aims for the future. Spohie being very family dedicated decided she would like to persue a career in Social Work.
Sophie is currently studying Social Work at Uni and has been involved in lots of hands on experience here in Australia (which is part of the course). Sophie also spoke how being a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar has opened her world to the vast differences in countries and communities with the different policies they hold. Sophie hopes one day with the experience she obtains hold a senior role of influence in Social Work and have the opportunity to write some of the policies herself.
Sophie was most delightful, and very interesting. We would like to thank her very much for her presentation and wish her the best for the future.

The Rotary Club of Albert Park, Indigenous Literacy Project - Update October 2010
The aim of this project was to assist with improving literacy among indigenous students. A number of groups have been identified in the Northern Territory through Sue Rose who is the Regional Learning Agent at the NT Open Education Centre. Initially three groups were identified for projects. In remote schools one of the big challenges is student attendance. Unfortunately the students who started the Sport in our Community and Games for kids have stopped coming to school so their projects will not be completed. No funding was used for those two as the money is only spent when the materials are ready for printing.
The good news is that 7 students from Gapuwiyak school have been doing a subject related to the health promotion of diabetes.
They decided to make calendars with pictures (of themselves where possible) and a short message to promote the diabetes message to their community. The calendars will be displayed in the local clinic, shop, school and council offices. They made the calendars at a residential school in Darwin three weeks ago and as a result the calendars have now been published. The total cost was about $850. Each calendar with postage worked out at around $40 each.
Some of the calendar pages they had printed follow. Thanks were expressed to RCAP for the funding and further projects will be identified as opportunity arises.
