This Weeks Speaker

Peter Logan Media Officer

Save Albert Park ~ aiming to relocate the Grand Prix to a permanent track ~

·          to stop motor racing in Albert Park

·          to reclaim & restore Albert Park as public open space & parkland

·          to work to protect Albert Park from the impact of the Grand Prix & other inappropriate development & activities

Peter Logan volunteers as the media officer for Save Albert Park, using his experience from 47 years in the workforce. He is now a business owner, running a small orchard but prior to that he worked in a medium and a large enterprise, as well as two terms as an independent councillor on Port Phillip Council. Peter is married with three children - all at home. A lifetime South Melbourne resident, Peter still competes in open competition for South Melbourne Athletic Club - it's just that he's a bit slower now but that won't stop him.   http://live.org.au/blog/?page_id=250

Last Weeks Speaker Najaf Mazari Afgan Refugee

Najaf Mazari

Mazar Development Fund logo

Last week we had the pleasure of Najaf Mazari speak at our meeting. Najaf told us of his life as a boy and young man in Afghanstan. How he fled the country and made his new life in Australia.

After being tortured by the Taliban and narrowly escaping certain death during the genocide of Hazara men and boys and reluctantly leaving behind a young wife and 6-month old baby, he made the dangerous journey overland, eventually crossing the ocean in a leaky boat to the shores of Australia, where he ended up in the Woomera Detention Centre. Najaf could not speak english had no money and only the clothes on his back. Najaf  being released, settled in Melbourne going to school to learn english and obtaining any rug jobs that were available. Najaf now owns his own  rug shop, selling traditional Afghan rugs. His wife and daughter were finally given permission by the Australian government to join Najaf in 2006 after a 6-year separation. In April 2007, he was granted Australian citizenship.

Najaf has done extremely well in the few years he has been in Australia, releasing the followng book - It is a story we've heard before - fearing for his life, a refugee seeks asylum in Australia, is 'vetted' by the rigorous system enforced enthusiastically by the Immigration Department, attains residency then citizenship, is eventually reunited with his family and makes good. But Najaf Mazari's memoir, The Rugmaker of Mazar-E-Sharif , begs the question, have we really been listening?

Najaf has also been busy establishing the Mazar Development Fund http://www.mazardevelopmentfund.org.au/about.htm

We would like thank Najaf very much for attending our meeting with his wife and daughter and giving a most informative and interesting presentation.

Cafe International Invite

Café International 2011

A Mysterious Murder

International House
University of Melbourne

We graciously welcome you to attend our annual fundraiser:

A '20s Murder Mystery   Café International 2011

This year, Café International takes you on the exciting and mysterious trail of a 1920s Murder Case. Follow our world famous detective through a whole new style and format to our entertainment program, and enjoy the most exciting experience of your year as the murder case unveils.

We take this opportunity to formally invite you to a night of first class entertainment and fine dining, and to take delight in the vast variety of talent the students of International House have to offer. Every year, we donate a percentage of the money raised to a charity, and this year, we
have decided to donate 50% of the funds raised from Café International to
our
sister campus, International House in Queensland, due to the terrible damage they sustained during the Summer floods. International House Brisbane has been forced to close down for the entirety of the first semester of this year, and we are all eager to help them in their goal to reopen in July, so that they can start supporting students as International House Melbourne supports us.

Café International will be held on
Saturday, 7

th May 2011
International House,

241 Royal Parade, Parkville

Our doors will open at 6:30pm for some pre-dinner drinks and entertainment, with

dinner and the show commencing at 7:15pm.

Dress Code: Black Tie

Tickets are available at AUD $80.00/person, inclusive of a three-course meal, free flow of beverages, and an intriguing night of performances and mystery.

RSVP by 22 April 2011

We have had a great time in years gone by with Café, and at the same time we support both International House and Rotary who are major benefactors of IH in Parkville.
