European Masters: Städel Museum, 19th-20th Century brings together a remarkable collection of masterpieces from the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, one of the finest collections in Europe. The NGV is truly privileged to host this exhibition, as the Städel have committed only the highlights of its renowned collection of 19th and 20th century European art. Alongside masterpieces by German artists are works by the greatest French, Belgian, Dutch and Swiss masters of the time. Included are iconic Neo-Classical, Realist, Impressionist and Symbolist works, through to breathtaking German Expressionist paintings and sculpture, rarely seen in Australia.
A high point is the presence of no fewer than ten works by Max Beckmann, the quintessential Expressionist artist. This is an unprecedented opportunity to see a spectacular array of the finest European art spanning the dynamic and transformative years of the 19th and 20th century.

We would like to say :
`Thank you to the McIldowie family for their generous contribution of signage for our Book Store. The sandwich board and two outdoor signs have already attracted passing cyclists, walkers and drivers to our store.
Many, many thanks.'
| COZ Project
Last Wednesday evening we had Neil Salvano attended our club meeting and gave a brief
Outline of the COZ Project
(Project subject to funding approval - advice expected by early September 2010)
The Rotary Club of Central Melbourne-Sunrise, the City of Melbourne and Victoria Police have developed a successful approach to improving the feeling of security and well-being of our young people during their late night social outings in the CBD.
Project model
·
The COZ Project involves the establishment of a "chill out zone" that provides a safe, well-lit space for young people to rest or wait for public/private transport, along with free light refreshments.
·
The presence of a mature civilian group
also has an indirect effect on reducing antisocial street behaviour and contributes to making Melbourne a more welcoming place.
·
"Proof of concept" was demonstrated during trials conducted outside St Paul's Cathedral over several Friday and Saturday nights in both December 2008 and December 2009.
Project need
·
In the 2009 trials, over 600 individual contacts were made with young people. Our advice from Victoria Police was that there was a noticeable reduction in tension in a known high risk area.
·
Qualitative assessment of the needs showed that young people - in the hours after midnight and before dawn - need a place to take a break from their social activities, re-hydrate, seek information and wait safely for public transport (eg: the Nightrider bus services that depart from the bottom of Swanston Street).
Project management and staffing
·
The project will be managed by the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne-Sunrise and staffed by volunteers from this and other Rotary Clubs. The project will be overseen by a Steering Committee comprising representatives from Victoria Police, The City of Melbourne, St Paul's Cathedral and Rotary District 9800.
·
To deliver COZ on 25 Friday nights plus 40 Saturday nights over Spring - Summer - Autumn will take ~130 volunteers. With that number, each volunteer would only be needed three times during that nine month period.
·
5 to 6 volunteers - including an experienced volunteer supervisor from RC Central Melbourne Sunrise - are needed to staff the "Chill Out Zone" each night, from ~10.30pm to 5.00am. The volunteers:
Ø
serve tea, coffee, soup, water and friendship
Ø
direct those in need of specialist help to Victoria Police
Ø
help the confused find their way home
Ø
show young people that Rotary cares
·
Initially positioned at the corner of Swanston St and Flinders Lane, using a self-contained, purpose-built trailer funded under the Federal Proceeds of Crime Act legislation.
·
Volunteers will receive pre-event briefings from the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne-Sunrise supervisors and Victoria Police officers.
Our Request
·
In principle
support now from the Board and members of the Rotary Club of Albert Park for the COZ Project.
·
If funding is approved by the Federal Attorney General's Department, then we would ask that the in principle support be converted into a commitment to provide a team of five volunteers (RC CMS would provide an experienced supervisor) to staff the "Chill Out Zone" on three nights during the period October 2010 - May 2011.
