Farewell Rotary Exchange Student Rosalie Schwank

Last Wednesday evening our club together with The Rotary Club of Chadstone East Malvern said farewell to Rotary Exchange Student Rosalie Schwank.

Rosalie gave us a most informative talk and powerpoint presentation on what she had done, where she had been, the friends she had made and how much she had learnt about the Australian way of life (must pick a football team). We would like to thank Rosalie very much for her time and presentation which delighted us all.

President Mike Perry along with members of the clubs wished Rosalie every success for her future and hoped that her experience was a most memorable one.

Rosalie with host families, Henry's, Gorman's, Andriotis's, Perree(absent).

This Weeks Speaker will be from PCYC

St Kilda Police and Citizens Youth Club
"Empowering Youth for Life."

In the depths of St Kilda, there's a humble graffiti-covered building that's home to a gymnasium. Not the kind inhabited by swish, lycra/leotard clad exercisers paying expensive membership fees to buff and finesse their already near-perfect bodies. But one whose members come in all shapes and sizes and include the homeless, the lonely, the mentally depressed, the at-risk, the disadvantaged; the ones most in-need of the physical and mental health benefits that come with exercise and physical activity. The St Kilda Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) was founded in 1947. Faced with boys of the area stealing apricots from her trees, neighbour Mrs Olive Anderson recognized a need for structured activity and went on to establish the PCYC - a community club with a strong emphasis on youth. More than fifty years later, the direction is still the same but the needs are far greater. The Rotary Club of Albert Park has invited some of the youth and managers associated with the PCYC to tell us more on Wednesday evening 21st July. We extend our invitation to the Rotary Club of St Kilda in the spirit of two hands can often achieve more than one. http://www.stkildapcyc.org/#/about

Last Weeks Speaker

Stephen Bond - Tour de France.

Last week Kevin Mooney anounced that it was Bastilles Day in France.

Bastille Day is a day of celebrations of French culture. Many large-scale public events are held, including a military parade in Paris, as well as communal meals, dances, parties and fireworks. http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/france/bastille-day

To highlight France Albert Park Rotarian Stephen Bond gave a most interesting and indepth talk on the Tour De France. Stephen who had spent time last year at the Tour de France gave first hand information on how hard it is for the participants of this race. His speech was accompanied with a powerpoint presentation by Kevin Mooney which highlighted many aspects for the race.
We would like to thank both Stephen and Kevin for their presentation, which was most informative and interesting.

The Rotary Foundation District Service Award
http://www.rotary.org/en/Members/GeneralInformation/Awards/Pages/AwardsforRotarians.aspx

We would like to congratulate these men on receiving these awards and their contribution towards Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Tree Planting Day

R OTARY E NVIRONMENTAL P LANTING SCHEME   - A Project of the Rotary Club of Manningham Inc.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                ROTARY TREE PLANTING DAY

  Sunday 8th August 2010.

As part of our on going R.E.P.S. program to help reduce "the salinity problem" in the Goulburn/Murray River System by planting trees and increasing the areas capacity to recover the bio-diversity capacity to restart the natural environmental cycle in this area; the president and members of the Rotary Club of Manningham Inc. District 9180invite your club members, families, friends and interested groups to take part in our tree planting day 8th August 2010, where 9000 trees can be placed on 4 sites around the Glenaroua-Broadford district.

The area we have chosen to work in (10 year programme) is the Sugarloaf Catchment, a large area feeding the creeks that flow into the GoulburnRiver, then the Murray River. In normal conditions thirty (30) tonnes of salt per square kilometre leave this area annually.

R.E.P.S aims to reduce the salinity at the source, which is known as the recharge areas. Where the rain water enters the soil, absorbs the salt and carries it into the creeks and streams that then feed into the rivers and also the artesian storage (water table etc.) contributing to the devastation existing in and around Goulburn/Murray River areas.

Activity requires Teams of  3 or 4

1 Planting

1 or 2 Placing & sinking Tree Guards

1 Suppling Tube guards, Stakes etc.

Duties to be rotated between the team

We need Commitment, and if possible the number of members & friends or other groups who can attend, to register by 23rd July 2010. On registration a detailed map will be sent to you. People attending will need to bring: warm clothing, strong footwear, Rainwear & Gardening Gloves, Rotary will provide the equipment and material for the actual planting.

Arrival 8.30am at Broadford; as we wold like to start planting at 9am

Morning tea will be provided on site and concludes with a BBQ lunch at approximately 1.30pm.

Directions:

Travels north along Hume Highway to Broadford turn off, turn Left at High St. continue along High Street to Mitchell Shire Office(113 High St.) where registration and site allocation will be conducted. Rotary Signs will be displayed.
