This Weeks Speaker - Donna Cooper Cambodian Kids

Here’s an article that was written by one of our volunteers, Miss Lynsey Ward
If you have never heard of the not for profit organisation the Cambodian Kids Foundation, it is a great shame.
This foundation was founded in 2006 by the Cooper family of Woodend . Since then they have improved the health of an entire village, created 2 wonderful schools, 2 kinderdartens, a medical centre, a portable medical centre, a

Donna Cooper the word "impossible" does not exist in her vocabulary. Leaving school at 14, unable to read or write properly, she went on to marry her childhood sweetheart and become a mother to 3 children.

In 2000 with no prior experience in running a business she opened the doors of her 1st store Color Me Cooper in her home town of Woodend. In 2005 she opened the 2nd Color Me Cooper store in Daylesford. What started as a small second hand store had grown into an amazing business stocking clothing & accessories from all over South-East Asia. Donna soon expanded her business by setting up her own fair trade tailors in Thailand, Nepal, India & Cambodia. Designing her own ranges of clothing.

In 2006 Donna took daughter Sam Cooper (16 at the time) to travel around Asia and experience a little piece of the world and its people. Backpacking through Cambodia they both soon found that the country and the Khmer people had stolen their hearts. The moment they were back in Australia they began fundraising for different organisations, funding the building of houses, wells & playgrounds - The Cambodian Kids Foundation was born!

The foundation keeps expanding with a new school in the works.  The new school will be located in Soksan Village and will be large enough to educate over 1000 students, and will also be one of the first Eco-friendly and self sustainable schools in Cambodia, using only recycled and eco-friendly materials and renewable energy to run the school. The students will be taught gardening, permaculture and agriculture along with the already taught curriculum at the Saing Sy School.

The Foundation has grown from two women wanting to help to one of the fastest growing NGO's in Cambodia. Now with over 25 Khmer staff members, 10 board members & 13 major projects.
