This Weeks Speaker

This weeks speaker will be Sophie Dowse.  Sophie is an Ambassadorial Scholar from USA and will be speaking on the Benefits of being an Ambassadorial Scholar.

Here is some information from the SCHOLARS ORIENTATION DAY

Information exchange was top of the agenda on Sunday 11th April, 2010 when
Inbound & Outbound Scholars (Peace & Ambassadorial) gathered for their
Orientation day at International House. Ostensibly a day for the 'elders' to impart Rotary & cultural knowledge to the students as they prepare for their respective courses, whether here or overseas, the major outcome is an exchange of names, ideas and cultural diversity. Scholars from seven countries being sponsored or hosted in three districts (9780, 9800 & 9810) played word games, challenged each other with their aims & aspirations and some recent alumni revealed the life-changing aspects of a single year living & studying in another country.

Ambassadorial Scholars are available, even at short notice, as speakers to your club. They have fascinating stories to relate about their country of origin and their field of study.

Check the District website for their contact details or contact RD9800 Ambassadorial Scholars Co-ordinator: David Gorman, RC Albert Park email:

The Texan Connection

The Texan Connection - District 9800 and District 5840

Rotary District 9800 is proud to start a global partnership with Rotary District 5840 in Texas, USA. A new partnership in 2010, we are excited about the exciting opportunities that exist with such an exchange. We hope that clubs here in our district and clubs in District 5840 can start a communication that will strengthen and grow our local support to our communities, as well as our efforts internationally.

In addition, the Group Study Exchange this year will occur between these two districts adding to the opportunities of sharing information:

Club Partnership

Clubs in both District 5840 and District 9800 have been paired with "partner clubs." The goal is for club presidents, officers and all the members to communicate with their partner clubs; sharing ideas, projects, fellowship and dreams for the year ahead and beyond.

The first steps are for club presidents and officers to reach out to one another and find out more about their partner club. Find out what projects they are working on. Clubs have been grouped with similarly sized clubs. Because there are more clubs in District 9800, some clubs in District 5840 have been paired with two clubs from District 9800.

The Rotary Club of Albert Park has been paired with - The Rotary Club of Boerne Noon

Last Weeks Speaker - Father Denis Andrew

Last week we had the pleasure of Current Province Leader for the Carmelites in Australia and Timor-Leste Catholic Priest Father Denis Andrew speak at our meeting.

After Ordination in 1980 Denis spent the next 30 years working in Carmelite Parishes around Australia.

It was at school Denis developed a love for distance running.   He has completed many marathons.  Denis spoke to us about how the benefits of running have him with a holistic approach to spirituality - healthy body, mind and spirit.  Being Provincial had opened up new fields, including a strong involvement with East Timor.  Timorese Carmelites joined the Australian Province of the Carmelites in 2001.  At present there are 45 Timorese Carmelites.  Denis spoke on how it had  been a challenge to adequately house them, educate them as well as sponsor humanitarian projects in the remote parish of Zumalai in the south of the country. We would like to thank Denis for his time and presentation which was most informative and interestining for all to listen to.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 9800
"CONFERENCE SUPPORTERS" FOR DISTRICT 9800 CONFERENCE

ADELAIDE – MARCH 31 TO APRIL 2 2011.

We are seeking the assistance of Rotary members, Rotary Clubs, Rotarians and non-Rotarians with businesses, who could contribute to the 2011 Conference with a supporters grant of $1000.00 to minimise the Conference costs.

Individual support would also be welcome.

Companies, Clubs and individuals will have their names printed on a pop-up banner in the House of Friendship, displayed on the overhead screens, as well as being listed in the Conference Directory as "Conference Supporters", also included in the Conference satchels and listed in the Networker/website.

This is an ideal way of supporting the Conference and keeping the registration costs to a minimum, given the very difficult task of finding suitable sponsors.

Please place this request in your Club bulletins and promote at Club meetings as soon as possible, and do not hesitate to contact me for further information.
