This Weeks Speaker-Ray Campbell

Ray Campbell - National Commodore - Australian Volunteer Coast Guard www.coastguard.com.au
The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard is an organisation composed entirely of volunteers, formed in 1961 to promote safety in the operation of small craft. It guards the coast in the most effective way - initially by education, example, examination and finally by search and rescue. The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard has no law enforcement powers and enjoys a reputation for being helpful and courteous to all boat owners. Australia, the world's largest island, has a coastline of 19,650 kilometers (12,210 miles). 90% of Australia's population lives within 120km of the coast and over 70% live in the coastal belt from Cairns in Queensland to Adelaide in South Australia. Flotillas and radio bases are located from the Skardon River in the Gulf of Carpentaria, down the eastern sea board to Ceduna in South Australia, including Tasmania and major inland lakes and weirs. Expansion is continuing in areas of need. Ray Campbell first joined the St Kilda Flotilla or VF2, in Victoria in 1983 and held the position of Flotilla Purser for one term prior to forming the VF05 Flotilla At Lake Eppalock in 1995 where he was appointed as Flotilla Commander, a position he held for five years until 1990. Ray was elected as the Squadron Commodore of Victoria in 1995 and was serving his 4th term as Squadron Commodore when elected as the National Commodore. Ray has represented Victoria at a national level both during his terms as Victorian Commodore and previously as the Deputy National Commodore.

Next Weeks Speaker Desiree Pettit

Evolve at Typo Station was founded in 1993 and has been offering opportunities for young people to make positive changes in their lives ever since. Using our former cattle grazing property on the edge of the Alpine National Park, Typo Station, we challenge disadvantaged and at risk young Victorians with a 100km hike and pioneer style living, while at the same time teaching them life skills such as effective communication and anger management. We also apply Narrative and Bush Therapy practices to allow our young people to take control of their lives and their futures. I am one of only two marketing staff working for Evolve and my background is varied, with qualifications in events management and marketing, and having worked in these areas as well as in account management and anti-money laundering compliance. I have worked in the not-for-profit space previously for the Royal Agricultural Society, and growing up in rural Victoria, I love spending time up at 'Typo' and seeing our young folk develop in their two-to-three year journey with us.

Last Weeks Speaker Tara Kornhauser

Last week we had the pleasure of our President Elect Kerry Kornhauser's daughter Tara Kornhauser speak at our meeting . Tara who  spent time living and working in some of the most remote places in Africa and Central Australia spoke about what life was like for  people in these areas and the help that they were able to give them. We would like to thank Tara for her great presentation which had many tales from an eye opening experience.

February - World Understanding Month

FEBRUARY - WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH .
23 February - Rotary's Anniversary .
Family Week - Second week of February.   The goal of Family Week is for Rotary clubs to connect with families in their communities, particularly those that need extra attention.
Share information on Family Week with club chairs. Recognize successful projects in your district. Domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, drug and alcohol abuse, and gang activity are just a few of the formidable challenges facing today's family. Clubs are urged to use this opportunity to promote family projects already underway or think about starting new ones. Download Celebrating Family Week for more information on Family Week activities. This month was chosen because it includes the birthday of Rotary International, February 23. During the month, Rotary clubs are urged to present programs which promote internaional understanding and goodwill, as well as launch World Community Service projects in other parts of the world.
