Tom Zoellner, Author and Professor of English at Chapman University, a fifth generation Arizonan and a former speechwriter for Gabrielle Giffords, explains how the corner of Oracle and Ina holds many invisible surprises, even to those who may have driven past it ten thousand times, and also for those who feel uncomfortable going there. The international media swarmed down on Tucson after the Jan. 8 shootings and broadcast the city's misfortune around the clock. La Toscana Village at the corner of Oracle and Ina was, for a time, the most photographed strip mall in the world. With its chain stores and faux-Tuscany facade, it looked ordinary and sun-faded -- completely of a piece for postwar Sunbelt architecture. But dig a little deeper at that corner and you could see a surprisingly rich dendocronology of how Tucson grew up in the modern age, its secret history with the mafia, its land politics and clues to some of the huge successes and persistent dysfunctions of the modern state of Arizona.

KEITH COBB gave the invocation. CHUCK SAWYER led the song with GARY GETHMANN assisting on the piano.
KEVIN WONG introduced a number of guests. We wished RAY WEICK happy birthday although he wasn’t sitting at the head table.
PHIL GUTT did a fantastic introduction of new member, GARY STOE. We learned that GARY STOE is Sales VP for Kachina Business Solutions, is from Lancaster, PA and is interested in hiking, camping, and golf.
KEVIN WONG started the announcements by raffling off two tickets to the football game donated by his “father” DR. JON WANG. Other announcements included DAVE GALLAHER introducing Eric Peng, KEN TUCKER pitching Boy Scout popcorn, GARY HIRSCH promoting the El Tour Polio Plus ride, DAVE GALLAHER again promoting the Rotary district conference, PAT LENNAN encouraging us to have the chicken dinner Friday night before the car show, and BOB SHAFF teaching us how to sell car show tickets.
PRESIDENT JIM reminded us to register for the Economic Summit program on October 31st.
MARY MARTIN introduced a fabulous program featuring DR. IMAN HAKIM, Dean of the U of A, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
All of this comes to you from a secret Oregon Duck fan. The good news is that it only counts as one loss!

Cam Moore grew up on a small ranch near Sonoita, Arizona. His family owned an equipment leasing business in Sierra Vista. Cam worked in the family business and around the ranch as he grew up. Decades before it became trendy, Cam and his family rescued a bay mare named Prissy. When the quarter horse was strong enough to be ridden, Cam soon found that she had a good handle and good cow sense. Soon Cam discovered she had also been trained as a roping horse. As word spread of their skills through the local ranch community, Cam and Prissy were called upon to help by ranchers at branding time, roundup, and routine gatherings for vaccinations or sale. His early adult years were spent helping in the family business in Sierra Vista. Cam moved to Tucson in 2000 and helped in the expanding family business.
In April, 2011, Cam started his own company, Arizona Business Equipment, 928 W. Grant Road, Tucson. He rents, sells, services, leases, and repairs copiers, fax machines, printers, and scanners. He handles name brand equipment from NEC, Panasonic, and Kyocera Mita. Cam loves the challenge of owning his own company and feels it has energized him. He has three employees and says employee motivation is a constant and frustrating goal in the business world. Cam's wife, Erica, is a senior business manager for the University of Arizona Medical Center. They have a daughter, Danica, age four.
Cam joined Rotary in 2006 at the urging of his sponsor, Marianne Freitas. He joined Rotary for the fellowship. A reserved, but friendly Rotarian, he is the head of the Sponsorship Committee for the Tuscotarian. Under his leadership, sponsors have been added. He urges anyone who would like to help the club and at the same time receive some excellent and cost friendly publicity on a weekly basis to contact him and he will gladly enroll you.
When he has some spare time, Cam likes to scuba dive in the sparkling waters near San Carlos, Mexico. He is also an avid fisherman when time permits. A mountain biker, Cam biked the Sweetwater trail late one afternoon recently with Matt Blair.

Remember the old saying if you are given lemons, make lemonade? After listening to Dr. Hakim last week that seems like very good advise! I just got her recipe for the medicinal lemonade and will get this posted in next week’s bulletin. Will be stopping at the store on my way home to pick up a supply of lemons.
2 weeks to go to the car show. Time for a second wind so we can finish strong. Lets all make that extra effort to sell our remaining tickets or help out at one of the events in the next 2 weeks where we will be selling tickets. The Classics Car Show is our signature event and creates more awareness for our club than anything else. We want to make certain we put our best foot forward and show why service oriented community leaders should join our esteemed group!
This week’s program has a little mystery around it. We are going to hear about some of Tucson’s past, both the bad and the good as seen by our presenter, Tom Zoellner. Tom has written a book on the subject and says not all of it is the “Chamber of Commerce’s version”. Should be interesting…..
Don’t forget about our program on Tucson’s economic future on 10/31. Registration will be open to the public on 10/1 so remember to register yourself and your guests soon so you won’t be left without a seat.
Have a great week and see you Wednesday.

The preparation of the lemonade is very simple: Blending 1 lemon in 20 oz cold water. 1) Wash 1 lemon, cut it in 4 to 8 small pieces. 2) Pour 20 oz of cold water in a blender and add 1 teaspoon of sugar or a sweetener, mix well for few seconds. 3) Add the pieces of lemon to the cold water in the blender and mix until the lemon pieces are cut to very tiny pieces. 4) Pour the lemonade in a glass through a mesh strainer or tea strainer (to retain the pieces of peel). 5) Drink it with food. You can add a little bit of sugar or sweetener based on your taste and preference. Drink it within a couple of hours.
