Dr. Smith is the Thomas R. Brown Distinguished Chair of Integrated Science and a Professor of Planetary Science at the UA. He is a long term Tucson resident and previously a member of the Tucson Rotary Club. Professionally, he has been involved in missions to Mars building the camera for Mars Pathfinder in 1997 and leading the Phoenix Mission in 2008. These activities led to NASA bestowing on him the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 2010, NASA’s highest recognition. Smith is now leading the imaging science on the new OSIRIS-REx mission to return samples from a nearby asteroid.
In September 2016 a University-of-Arizona-led mission will launch to a nearby asteroid named RQ36. The goal of the mission is to examine the asteroid surface, find the most interesting surface material, touch down on its surface, collect a “handful,” then return to Earth in 2023 and land a capsule containing pristine asteroid samples for examination in our laboratories. As the science lead for the cameras, I will be responsible for providing the eyes that map the asteroid and identify the most scientifically interesting sites for the sampling maneuver. Having started the program in August 2011, we are rapidly honing in on the flight designs for the cameras that will be built here at the UA. Furthermore, the mission will be operated during its 7 years in space from the old Phoenix building on Sixth Avenue. RQ36 is a carbonaceous asteroid interesting for the organic materials associated with this class; it may give us clues to the formation of the solar system and the origin of life.

PRESIDENT JIM LUBINSKI called the meeting to order and reminded everyone to sit with or at least stop by their team captains table with any questions about their Car Show duties. PAT ZUMBUSCH then did a Car Show themed invocation follow by DAN GUARE and SONNY SOLOT leading us in the Pledge and singing of "America" accompanied by GARY HIRSCH on the piano. PRES JIM then reminded us to fill the scholarship cups and enjoy our fellowship lunch break. Once we got going again, RICK WELCH filled in to introduce guests and visiting Rotarians. Next it was Birthday time where we wished DAVE GALLAHER (Pres. Elect), JERRY HARRIS (Car Show ticket selling extraordinaire) and RICK ROSE (Creative Producing extraordinaire) Happy Birthdays. Our fabulous PAST PRES Joni Condit missed her birthday wishes since her husband Bill had some health issues they were dealing with that day. But I am happy to report that I saw Bill Condit at the Car Show on Saturday and he is fine!
After PRES JIM reminded us to sign up for our 10/31 meeting and MIKE ANDERSON'S lunch/hike/post Car Show Celebration on 10/21, he turned over the mic to the hard working and wonderful Car Show co-chairs MARIANNE FREITAS and TOM STRASBURG to talk about "Car Show Prep". We watched some hilarious video's featuring MATT BLAIR, KEITH COBB, ROGER HARWELL, JOE PENNINGTON as Paul Harris, CHRIS EDWARDS and Jim Click. We also heard from JOE PENNINGTON, ARNIE JACOBSEN, CHUCK SAWYER, DOT KRET and then JON WANG led us in a rousing chant. PRES JIM closed the meeting reminding us that we are dark next Wed. (10/17/12) and to have a GREAT Car Show!!!

When BRET HUSTON was our club President (1999 – 2000), he gave President-Elect MIKE ANDERSON (2000-01) the task of creating a fundraiser that would help us increase our Foundation corpus to one million dollars so that we could undertake more significant service projects for our community.
As our club's first fundraising committee chairman and originator of our first-ever auction in 1986, Mike was not new to Rotary fundraising. Although that first auction of donated items netted Rotary Club of Tucson $20,000, and provided the seed money to fund our Foundation, Mike's vision for the 1999-2001 fundraiser was far more ambitious.
With his expertise in buying and renovating houses, Mike suggested RCoT build a house and raffle it off by selling $10 raffle tickets. He had already purchased a property for his company to renovate which he sold to RCoT at his cost, and the task began.
Now, stop and think. The second year when we began the actual construction, Mike was our new President. Like ARNIE JACOBSEN with the Car Show, Mike ran his own business, organized and executed the “10 Bucks Wins a Dream Home!" fundraiser, at the same time as he led our club as our President. Mike and Arnie are our only two Presidents to have achieved such a task, and with phenomenal success!
The property had a small house on the rear of a rather large lot in town, to which we built another beautiful, new 1,600' house in front making the old house the “guest house”. Members helped whenever their talents allowed, providing more fun and fellowship.
We were fortunate to have members in our club with construction expertise. Mike organized his team of JOHN MCCALEB (McCaleb Construction and President 2002-03), TIM PUNTENNEY (Cobre Building), who along with Mike, led the way. They were supported by MARSHALL DENNINGTON’S heating and cooling expertise (TEMCO Air Environmental), ARNIE JACOBSEN'S (Lucky Wishbone/Sunland Foods) promotional skills, generous community businesses who donated products and services, five other Rotary clubs who helped sell our tickets (receiving a share of the ticket cost for their clubs), local media, and STEVE CHRISTY (then owner of Steve Christy Chrysler-Jeep) who generously donated a brand new Jeep for us to give as a second prize.
We sold 35,000 ten dollar chances for someone to win “our” house, and in the end basked in a net profit of $249,000! We had a beautiful dinner at Lowes Ventana Resort (our Valentine’s Day party) where the winning ticket was drawn. The winner was member Pete Raguzin’s daughter! The quarter million dollar net pushed our foundation corpus over the million dollar mark and accomplished many objectives. Most of all, this gave us the financial strength to undertake the Reading Seed program and it gave us the confidence that we could successfully undertake major fundraising events in the future for the benefit of our community.
A simple "thank you" to MIKE and SUSAN ANDERSON seems inadequate for their continuing generosity and dedication to RCoT. They continued this year by donating $5,000 toward the purchase of our beautiful raffle car, and again hosted a luncheon at their beautiful Mt. Lemmon cabin after a Rotary hike on the mountain on October 21, 2012.

I hope you all enjoyed your week off after the car show. Again, all those who helped make the sixth annual Tucson Classics Car Show the tremendous success it was, are to be congratulated.
Still a lot on our agenda this month. A great program from Peter Smith on “Osiris Rex” awaits us this Wednesday. Then the weekend of 10/26-27 brings the district 5500 conference to the DoubleTree. Please consider attending some part of this educational and motivational event. And we close the month the following week with our economic summit featuring four of Tucson’s political and business leaders talking about what we need to do to improve Tucson’s economy. Remember, everyone must pre-register for this event through clubrunnner. This will be a tremendous opportunity to invite guests and prospective members. With two weeks to go we are approaching 200 registered so you can see this will be a popular event! Please make a note on your calendars that we will not be meeting at the DoubleTree on November 14th. Our meeting will be moved to the Radisson. You will receive more information on this change in the next couple of weeks.
Have a great week and see you Wednesday!
