Dan Marries of KOLD-TV

Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.  That’s exactly how I feel about my chosen career in journalism.  I’ve been anchoring and reporting stories at KOLD News 13 since June, 1999.

I moved to Tucson from Yuma, AZ where I was the main anchor for KYMA-TV.  Prior to Yuma I spent a year at the CBS affiliate in Mankato, MN.

I got my start in television news at KREX-TV in Grand Junction, CO.  That’s also where I earned by BA in Mass Communications/Broadcast Journalism from Mesa State College.

When I’m not working I love spending time with my nine year old son Kurtis.  You can find us wandering around 4th Avenue or hiking up “A” Mountain. Sabino Canyon and Mount Lemmon are our favorite spots for exploring and camping.  One of my Favorite past times is throwing a steak on the BBQ and hanging out with friends and family.  I also enjoy scuba diving.  Iam a certified PADI Rescue Diver.

For those of you who were not present when the winning ticket (#13787) for this year's Tucson Classics Car Show raffle was drawn by Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, we were disappointed the winner was not present.  A phone call from the stage and ten minutes later, the winner stood before us, excited about his win!  His name is Ron Rodriguez.  He bought ONE TICKET at a Padres game.

Ron is single with an adult daughter.  He was born in New Mexico, but moved to Arizona when he was one year old and was raised in San Manuel where his father was an electrician for a mining company. He served in the US Marine Corp. for seven years and has lived in Tucson for the past twenty-seven years. He works for Concrete Designs, a precast concrete company.

Although he loves Corvettes and used to own a 1979 Corvette, he opted for the cash.  Anyone want to buy a beautiful, red, 2001 Corvette convertible - priced at $18,500?  Call MIKE ANDERSON at 299-3407!!  Once the red Corvette has been sold, Mike will begin searching for a new raffle car for the 2013 show.

ImageWhat a great presentation from former member Dr. Peter Smith last Wednesday.  It’s amazing what is being done at the U of A.  And the fact that it should bring $200 million to the local economy is an added bonus.

Hopefully many of you will have attended the district conference over the weekend and have come back motivated with new ideas and ways we can help to improve our club.  Remember, the more you put into Rotary, the more you will get out in return.  I will be anxious to hear from those of you who were able to attend.

This week is one I have been looking forward to for several months.  Our program dealing with the future of the Tucson economy should be very interesting.  This will likely be the most attended meeting we have had in some time.  As I am writing this we are approaching 250 registered with several days to go.  I hope you all registered and so you do not miss out on this special event.  If you are attending, consider sitting at a table with some or our guests.  We are having our board and several of our past presidents try to sit at different tables so we can make sure our guests feel welcome and can have any questions they may have about Rotary and our club answered.  This will be a great chance for all of us to promote/show off our club and attract new members.  We are filming the program courtesy of Rick Rose and his team at Film Creations.  Not sure yet how we will use this but, might be a great thing to promote on social media.  It may also be available to view by those members who will be unable to attend.

The Ride to End Polio is fast approaching.  Many of you have generously sponsored one of our members who will be riding in the event.  The goal of raising $200,000 is not out of reach.  Many thanks to Gary Hirsch and his team for driving this event.  I look forward to participating.

Have a great week and see you Wednesday!
