For those of you who missed it, local Tucson resident, Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa gave a great presentation as a motivational speaker at the Friday luncheon during the recent Rotary District Conference.  Dr. Khalsa is a personal friend of DG Randy Brooks and is President and Medical Director of the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation based here in Tucson.  His work has been published in many medical journals and in medical text books.

Dr. Khalsa’s key points during his presentation were summarized into four powerful steps: (1) Slow Down; (2) Supplement Your Diet; (3) Stimulate Your Mind and Body; (4) Serve Your Spirit.

I have to admit, I was all ready having problems with following #1 with figuring out ways to slow down in my life.  Business issues, Rotary issues, cell phones, email, social media all come together to push us faster and become more stressed.  We must slow down.   It is healthier!

Supplements were a key recommendation to improving overall health and mind and spirit.  Dr. Khalsa is a firm believer in eating organic foods and eating fish and avoiding my favorite food, AJ’s Cowboy Rib Eye.  We should focus on a plant based diet and eat more steamed vegetables.  Vitamin supplements mentioned include Vitamins B and Vitamin E.

Physical and mental exercise was Dr. Khalsa’s third powerful step to avoiding Alzheimer’s disease in your future.  He recommended a minimum of 30 minutes a day (remember slowing down to make room for this important 30 minutes) and urged everyone to do both cardio and strength training.  Exercise increases “good” blood chemicals to the brain and increases the part of your brain that produces base stem cells.

The fourth key ingredient to avoiding Alzheimer’s is to lead a more spiritual well being.  This includes self acceptance, self confidence, personal growth, and positive relationships.  All of these add purpose and meaning, peace of mind, and sustained personal growth.

People who have goals have a dramatically reduced risk of developing Alzheimers.

Dr. Khalsa’s last segment included many of the things we get out of being a part of the greatest service organization in the world, Rotary International.  So, just being a member of the Tucson Rotary Club is all ready reducing your chances of getting this terrible disease!!

ImageJust when you thought the elections were over, we still have an important one to decide.  Last week you were introduced to the slate of candidates who will stand for election to our club board with their 2 year terms beginning next July.  The strong field includes Angela Baurley, Matt Blair, Jennifer Hoffman, David Pashkow, Darrell Stewart and Kevin Wong.  Thank you to the six of you for agreeing to serve if elected.  More information on each candidate will be distributed at our next meeting with the vote to take place on the 21st.  Following the election of our three new directors, next on the agenda will be the announcement of our new PEE in early December.   Please make certain you will be at our 11/21 meeting to cast your vote.

Have you followed up with any of the guests/potential members you brought to our economic summit meeting a couple of weeks ago?  If not, please do.  Some of you have told me that their guests were impressed and will consider joining our club.  We need to constantly be recruiting new members to ensure the future of our club.

This week we will hear from Wayne Peate on the JTED program in Tucson.  This program focusing on technical education in our high schools was started several years ago and Wayne will be giving us an update on its progress.

Have a great week and see you Wednesday!
