Wheels for April 12 by John Kanelis
Mary Emeny has given us a peek into the future? It's called Mariposa Eco-Village, a project near and dear to the heart of this self-described "former hippie." Mary brought a great program to the Club, telling us of a plan to develop a "self-sustaining" community. It's patterned after successful projects in Denmark, such as one that uses steam from power plans to use in greenhouses. Mariposa is located near Wildcat Bluff, just off Soncy Road. The project is at a caleche mine and the idea is to get residents here to change an attitude that "things left over are going to the landfill." Why not reuse this stuff? Mary asks. The residential community is trying to "create a school for regenerative development," Mary told us. The long-range plans call for development of a residential community, using single-family units and condominiums. "We also hope to space for workshops and conference space for students" to learn about a new way of living, Mary said. Most interesting project, Mary. Thanks for bringing a great program.
Online registration for the 2012 District 5730 Conference is available at the website www.ridistrict5730.org. The conference is occuring in Ruidoso, N.M., June 8-10. District Governor David Norris is planning a fun-filled weekend in the New Mexico mountains. Let's all take part.
Parking problems at our weekly meeting? No worries. We have some additional parking available, at Sixth Avenue and Harrison Street, in the rear parking lot of Club 212. Let's take advantage of the parking.
Calling all Rotarians. If you know of a Rotary Club of Amarillo member who's been absent from our weekly meetings, give them a shout. Tell them you miss them and want to see them bless our meeting with their presence.
Round of applause this week to: President John Early for presiding. David O'Dell and Gay Chalfant for leading us in song.
Bill Summerhill for providing the invocation and some food for thought. Dale Bippus, Jeff Neely for welcoming us.
Greg Green for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians. Jeff Busjahn for serving as April program chair. and Tom Higley for selling Rotary Foundation drawing tickets.
