Wheels for April 5
by Julie Ontiveros

Welcome back, Mr. Hambassador. Rick Vanderpool
, a traveling photographer and chronicler of favorite Texas things, returned to the Rotary Club of Amarillo for a showing of pictures he has taken around the Lone Star State. Rick told us of plans to map the entire state using his favorite hamburger joints as guides. He has marked images of "Texas" in all 254 counties. Rick's devotion is to finding the perfect hamburger, and admits to becoming a bit of a "hamburger snob." He did tell us, though, that the view from the Amarillo Club tops any other view he has seen in Texas as he continues his tour. "It's far better than looking at the desert in Terlingua," Rick said. Amen to that, brother. His next big project? Rick said he is considering a quilt expedition. He can start by visiting our own Candy Norris, a serious quilter. Thanks for the great program, Rick. Safe travels.

Online registration for the 2012 District 5730 Conference is available at the website www.ridistrict5730.org. The conference is occuring in Ruidoso, N.M., June 8-10. District Governor David Norris has pledged that this year's conference will be "short on plenary meetings and long on fun."

Worried about parking downtown for our meetings? We have some additional parking available, at Sixth Avenue and Harrison Street, in the rear parking lot of Club 212. Let's take advantage of the parking.

Camp RYLA still has room for young people willing to have the experience of a lifetime. Ken McIntosh of the Big Spring Rotary Club, says that "all camp fees and completed forms are to be in by Monday, May 7. This will give us enough time to order the number of various items we need for the campers during the week." For further information, email Ken at revkm@yahoo.com, or call him at (423) 517-4821.

Taylor Forti, an online sales rep for Town Square Media, took a bow as the Rotary Club of Amarillo's representative to this year's Group Study Exchange mission, which leaves May 15 for a four-week tour of the Dominican Republic; the team will be hosted by District 4060, which sent a team to West Texas a year ago. Taylor is joining three other team members -- Gentrye Houghton, sponsored by Amarillo West Rotary Club; Kim Bruce, sponsored by the Canyon Rotary Club; and Brett Turnage, sponsored by the Midland West Club -- on a team led by Rotarian Dianne Anderson, also of the Midland West Club. The team is finishing up its preparation for the adventure of a lifetime. This outstanding team will do us all proud.

Round of applause this week to:
President John Early
for presiding.
Doyle Moore and Gay Chalfant for leading us in song.
Melvin Edes for providing the invocation and some food for thought.
Dale Bippus, Jeff Neely and Dick Weddington for welcoming us.
Mary Stephens

Jeff Busjahn
for serving as April program chair.
and Basil Walker
for selling Rotary Foundation drawing tickets.
