Wheels for April 21
by Julie Ontiveros

This week we learned about the phenomenon of shale gas from speaker Marlon Downey, Global Oil and Gas. Marlon, a long-time expert in his field, shared a brief history of shale gas and what it means for the future. Shale gas has become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States over the past decade and is also sparking interest around the world. There is an estimated 2000 trillion cubic feet of shale gas in the U.S. For reference of how vast the supply is, the US uses 20 trillion cf of natural gas annually. Though use of shale gas requires a larger tank in vehicles, the equivalent cost to fuel is fifty cents a gallon. Thanks to Eddie Scott and Program Chaor Bob Juba for bringing us an interesting and informative program.

The Rotary Club Garden Party will take place June 18. Bill Archinal is looking for committee members to help. He really wants to engage anyone interested, particularly those members who have joined since January 2008. Let Bill know if you would like to join in the fun.

President Jake Richards told members that the Amarillo Independent School District recently recognized all Amarillo Rotary clubs for their support of kids.

Our appreciation this week goes to: Jess Ghormley for leading us in songs; Renee Wilson for accompanying on piano; Mel Darnell for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians; Doyle Moore for our invocation; Tom Higley for selling Rotary Foundation drawing tickets (getting closer to $3000 in the pot); and Dale Bippus and Jeff Neely for welcoming us. Our appreciation to President Jake Richards for his leadership in presiding over another great meeting.
