Wheels for Aug 11
by Denise Blanchard

Tom Mechler, Vice Chairman of the Texas Dept of Criminal Justice was the program today. Taxpayers spend $3 Billion each year on the criminal justice system that employs approximately 40,000 people and houses approximately 156 thousand incarcerated felons. The good news is that since 1995, the recidivism rate of parolees is down 24.8% to 24.3%. Tom got involved in the criminal justice system as a volunteer in a prison ministry. His desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others has landed him in a position to affect the changes brought about by incarceration and one way he has done that is by introducing the "Quest for Authentic Manhood" program into every prison in Texas.

Stick 'em up. District Governor David Norris offered a Hold-Up report, telling how Police Sgt. Brent Barbee held up Jean and Joe Metz from Princess Ann, Maryland. They enjoyed the experience offered by our friends at the Ashmore Inn, Big Texan and the play "Texas" so much that they decided to stay a couple of days! Thanks to Melvin Edes for the Hold-Up and to District Governor David Norris and Corinna Isbell for accompanying the Metz' for the evening. On a side note, Officer Barbee suffered some injuries due to a fall through some sheetrock at his home, please pray for his quick recovery. In his absence, our own Jeff Lester will don the uniform for the next Hold-Up.

Reminder that the first Rotary District Newsletter has been posted during Governor David Norris' term. Check it out at the district website.

We are sorry to report that Judge Mary Lou Robinson has submitted her resignation from the Club as of today.

We are also sorry to report that Past District Governor Dudley Faver passed away Friday, Aug. 5.

And thanks go to Past President Kanelis for presiding over the meeting today, to Bill Summerhill for leading us in song, to Renee Wilson for her musical accompaniment, to Cal Harriman for his invocation, to Corinna Isbell for intoducing guests and visiting Rotarians, to Bob Russell for selling Foundation Drawing tickets, and to Mark Odle and Andy Price for serving as greeters.

And thanks to Mike Good for another great program!
